Do you need an HDMI cable between a TV and an amplifier?

It's a subquestion from a bigger question I asked in another thread. Have a look at this pic: Is the hdmi connection to the amp needed at all?

again for what?

what are you wanting to do?

if you want sound from your TV to your amp you will need more than an HDMI cable.

Err why do you even need an HDMI in that set up you have no AV kit connected so all it can send to the TV is stereo sound.

but yes the HDMI would send sound TO the TV. and the opyical out on the TV can send sound to the AMP optical in.

Depends on what you're conneccting to the amp, optical 'wont do' for HD audio. If you're talking about an stereo amp, which it looks like from your diagram then stereo amps dont have HDMI connections and not many have optical either.

I pulled this question out of a bigger one here:

http://community.whathifi.com/forums/t/280125.aspx

I want a single amp to handle my TV and some stereo playerrs (phono, cassette, ipod)

"Err why do you even need an HDMI in that set up you have no AV kit connected so all it can send to the TV is stereo sound."

That's the question I was asking - *do* I need that HDMI cable at all? I can't think of a reason why I'd want to send sound from the amp to the TV, so I think you're saying that I don't need it at all?

You might need to connect 'a' video cable to the tv from the amp to get to its 'settings menu' perhaps. But then a standard analogue yellow 'video composite' lead will do

But from what I can see there youve got the whole thing setup wrong ~

The dvd player should be connected to the amp with a digital cable ( optical, coax or hdmi) to get surround sound

The humax should be connected via a digital connection

You dont mention what the amp is but if it has 'upscaling' capabilities you might find its better than the tv at upscaling which means the dvd player should possibly be conencted to the amp via hdmi

The humax should be connected to the dvd player via a scart to be able to record from the humax

We need to clarify our terminology here: if you're talking about a stereo amplifier, then there won't be any HDMI inputs and/or outputs, and so the question is academic. Or indeed pointless.

If we're talking about a home cinema receiver or amplifier, ie with surround sound processing and able to drive five or seven speakers and a subwoofer, then yes most of these now have HDMI inputs and outputs, so can take the picture from multiple sources and route it to the TV. All but the most basic HDMI-equipped receivers can also extract sound from the HDMI connection.

So...

1) If you're using a stereo amp, there won't be any HDMI connections, as already discussed. I'd run analogue audio outputs from the recordable DVD machine and the Humax to the amp, and also analogue stereo from the TV if you want to watch broadcast TV from the TV's internal tuner with sound via the amplifier. If, of course, the TV has analogue outputs.

2) If you have an AV receiver able to take sound from HDMI inputs, use those for the DVD-R machine and Humax, connect an HDMI from the receiver's output to the TV to allow the video to be sent on to the telly, and run either an optical digital connection or stereo analogue connection from whatever audio out the TV has back to the receiver so you can get the sound from the TV's internal tuner into the receiver.

3) If you have a basic AV receiver unable to do sound from HDMI, then connect up as you have in your diagram, but with digital or analogue audio connections from the DVD-R, Humax and TV to carry sound. Or you can connect the DVD-R and Humax through the receiver, and then on via an HDMI to the TV, but with additional digital or analogue audio connections to the receiver.

"what Amp do you want and AV or Stereo amp.@@

I suppose that is indeed my main and only real question here.I'm going to read all the above advice later with a cold towel wrapped around my head, but there looks like there's some good advice there.

I want advice on what amp to get and how to connect it up in the most efficient way. Assume I've got a TV, a humax, a cassette, an iPod and a DVD recorder, I want the right amp and speaker bundle to allow me to get the best of both worlds - stereo and AV.

My budget isn't massive either.... ;-)

so back to the original question.

you need to ask this will i be feeding anything to the amp by HDMI? if yes then you Will need an HDMI to the TV (unless you downscale to Component if possible). Or if you want to in the future, upscaling DVD or Blu ray?

then do you want surround sound or will a 2.1 set up do or just a stereo....

I would forget about the connections as that is all easy. But start off with what do you want to be listening to and watching.
