Yeah, fair enough, but AVI are one of many speakers, and since the guy already has a fine amp, it would make sense to go passive. To my ears, there ain't a world of difference between active and passive though haven't heard the AVIs. I'd go with CNO for once, though personally I think the Ls3/5a clones ared the way to go. I like mine in my cheapo system 2.

Well, as far as I can see, most people's advice on this forum consists of recommending speakers they own themselves.

I don't usually bother making suggestions but in this case, since the OP is a classical music fan (like me), I thought he would be more likely to appreciate the exceptional clarity offered by the ADMs which IMO is particularly important with well recorded acoustic music.

this is very true, im a fan of classical music too...i own the ae1mk3s, i also have dynaudio audience speakers...my reference recording would be vivaldi concerti da camera vol 1, il giardino armonico, teldec...theres a sopranino flute on concerto no3..i always thoufht they had recorded it badly? so screeching, tinny souning i found it almost unbearable to listen to..with the ae1 mk3s it sounds lovely! in fact giardino armonicos punk rock approach to vivaldi has gone and been replaced by a dynamic beautiful interpretation which is very appealing on the ear..this recording is a roller coaster ride..and my speakers have controlled the music..my dynaudios couldnt get close to it at all...i cant recommend the ae1s highly enough..awesome!

I think it'll be hard to audition those but if you're willing to try blind you may be nicely surprised:

Dynaudio makes wonderfully balanced and neutral-sounding speakers.

Try a pair of Excite x12 as suggested earlier in this thread.

I heard them a year ago and they sounded absolutely fabolous.

If budget permits, get the Excite x16 though.

In comparison with the x16, the x12 comes off sounding a little smallish.

But that is only something you will notice when directly comparing the two side by side.

If you only listen to the x12 on it's own, I'm sure you will find it a very attractive speaker.

I wonder who that was...? 8)

Man this Dynaudios the X12 really are some gems!

I often wonder if all that bass that detail can come from those boxes...!?

I only listen to classical music and have had alot of disappointents with HIFI in general. It is often very unrealistic and makes chamber music (ie string quartets) sound too bright and lacking in soundstage/depth. However, I chose Neat Petit SX over the DB1's as they offered much greater immmediacy and clarity, with reasonable softness and good trebble. I didn't like the Motve 2's either. I also had to change my CD player from an expensive Densen to reasonable Marantx Pearl Lite.

I would go for Harbeth or Spendor classic line.Because such kind of speakers are complete, when the others brands has some imperfection left intentionally in speakers lines .Expensive line more perfection, cheaper line more imperfection you find in the sound.Let say dynaudio has several speaker line dm focus xeo excite contour confidence .Usually cheaper speakers are orientated to pop music while more expensive to subtle music

I have a friend with a Naim setup (think he's got a NAC pre/power setup) and he runs it through some Shahinian Compass loud speakers. He's a real classical fan from baroque to modern as well as listening to modern popular music. You could try to find some 2nd hand Shahinian Starters (a slightly smaller version) for not far off your budget.

I also listen to classical music exclusively. I have the Epos Elan 10 speakers and have found them the best for this genre's detail and soundstage. My room is on the smallish size (11' x 13'), but for larger rooms I'd recommend Epos Elan 15. Both are stand-mounted monitors.

Well, I spent a lot of time listening to systems in demonstration rooms, at friends houses and wherever we could.

6 weeks ago, I bought a pair of PMC GB1i speakers and have been very happy with them in the setting we intended.

Thank you eveyone for all the suggestions - eventually, I'll replace my main system's speakers (Linn LP12/Arcam/Squeezebox/Naim/Tangent - yes, TM1s :) ) which now sound decidedly unresponsive !

Congratulations ! a very good choice , the GB1i's should give you many years of musical pleasure .

Perhaps you might be considering a larger pair of PMC's for your main system . ;)
