There's been countless examples of groups playing such sonic tricks on us, over many years. Pink Floyd's Wish You Were Here and A Momentary Lapse of Reason are recent examples. Falling rain was popular, for a while. It's slightly disconcerting when the sound disappears, I admit but after re-listening to these tracks just to confirm that it's intentional, I revel in the trickery, and enjoy it.

1975 and 1987 are recent to you?

Is your real name Methuselah?

Speaking of Pink Floyd, on The Division Bell, track 1 (Cluster 1) all I hear is silence for the first 10 secs or so.
Is this right or is it my system?

He was the oldest man who ever lived but he died before his father.

Not quite that old, Chebby (73, actually, but feel older some days), and "recent" refers to the remasters I've acquired over the last few months. :) Apropos of that, isn't it getting expensive?

Samd, Cluster One is very quiet for the first 10 seconds or so, both on vinyl and CD; there's what might be a heartbeat/pulse, very quiet, which becomes random noises, building for about a minute, before recognisable istruments appear.

I still like odd sound effects, a favourite being the train on JMJ Magnetic Fields.

New Born, the first track on Muse's Origin of Symmetery CD is an example of how not to do it. It shows what happens when you have a quiet intro followed by a loud main part of the song with too much dynamic compression. Still a great track. Just would have been better without the compression.

Jethro Tull's Thick as a Brick original vinyl release is an example of an OK recording of a quiet acoustic intro.

And then there's Led Zep's Stairway to Heaven from their IV LP which is a bit compressed, but could have been a lot worse.
