OK so we've just bought a new blu ray player (Sony SBDP 370) and wanting to hook it up with the stereo system and adding surround sound at the same time.

so basically we need to be able to switch between stereo sound and surround sound.

Items Currently have
  • Celestrion A1s
  • Rotel Pre Amp
  • Rotel Power amp RB971 Mk.2
  • Sony Blu Ray
  • Shanling CD Player
Could some one help us. Ive thought of an AV amp which has pre outs so... Bluray > AV amp > Pre Amp > Power amp Budget of around £250 unless we need to get rid of Rotel stuff then would increase budget

It's easy to do. If you want HD audio from your blurays, £250 could be a tough call. To get a receiver with pre outs for front left and right and HD audio decoding onboard, you might have to add £100 to your budget.

Do it exactly as you described. Send the multi-channel audio to the AV amp for surround processing which will then send the front 2 channels via the pre-outs to your pre-amp. I'm not familiar with your pre-amp, my Alpha 9 has a processing mode specifically for this type of operation.

In my case I go Blu-ray to AV to Integrated. Works great :)

In terms of Amps to look at - I've had a quick peek at Richer Sounds who have the outgoing Sony STR-DA3500ES (http://whathifi.com/Review/Sony-STR-DA3500ES/) and Yamaha RXV667 (http://whathifi.com/Review/Yamaha-RX-V667/) at £300 which both include Pre-outs.
Budget models often don't include a pre-out (Sony STR-HD810 for example) so an end-of line £500-600 amp should have sunk into your budget.

Surely your AV amp will be acting as a pre-amp so in effect you will be pre-pre-power. Sell the Rotel pre-amp use the AV amp for this purpose. That should allow you the budget for a higher quality AV amp.

I guess that'll depend on which you prefer for sterio listening and if the extra budget will reach an AV amp that can match the Rotel combo in that aspect. Of course a kit-laden journey to the nearest audition room will be the proof of the pudding.

My point was the AV amp will already be performing the pre-duties so the Rotel pre-amp would be receiving a signal that has already been processed by the AV amp anyway. How can it add anything to an already processed signal. I think that makes sense :)

You're missing the point...

The stereo sources would be connected to the Rotel Pre, so the A/V amp is bypassed/not used when listening to music.
