Desktop speakers for PC

Can anyone recommend a pair of desktop speakers for my daughter's PC? I want a pair which will take a signal from a USB port. I've looked at the KEF "Eggs" which seem ideal but cost more than I want to spend. Is there a cheaper option?

My go-to would be the Ruark Audio MR1 Mk2, but I imagine they're a bit more expensive than you would like. What's your price range?

And also, why are you looking to get audio through the USB (or is that MicroUSB?), if you don't mind me asking.
