I'm reading up reviews on BD players and receivers with a view to purchasing some time soon. In the review of the Denon DVD-2500BT, the 'Against' says it's 'only a transport'. Can someone explain to me what a transport is and do I need another component unit to make up for the deficiencies of a transport.

Ta very much.

As a transport it doesn't have any on-board decoders and will simply bitstream the audio to be decoded elsewhere, so to enjoy HD sound you're going to need to pair it with a receiver that can decode the incoming HD-audio bitstreams.

An alternative is to get the DVD3800BDCI which, when available in the UK, should have all of the transport and video quality of the 2500T but also has on-board decoders and can output HD audio direct to the multi-channel audio inputs onto any mutlichannel amp/receiver. The downside being the 3800BDCI will cost close to 2x the price of the 2500T.

Personally I'd go with the 2500T and a decent receiver with the prerequisit HD decoders on board.
