Forget about Surround Sound, but if you go purely on 720/1080i Upscaling Picture Quality and 2 channel Stereo alone then, in my opinion, the DENON DVD 1940 far surpasses the SONY BDP 300 and the PS3,

though I would love to be able to audition the SAMSUNG BDP 1400 which does however appear to have received reasonably good reviews in the US.

I saw the new SONY via both HDMI and Component with a SONY 46W3000: with a Casino Royale Blu Ray Disc. The picture via HDMI is much better than through Component but alas for me the picture doesn't quite 'Hit the Mark'

compared with the DENON which isn't even a Blu Ray Player but really knows how to Upscale standard DVD's with exceptional detail and great clarity

Even the PS3 did nothing for me I'm afraid

In many respects whilst its picture quality was on a par with the SONY Blu Ray Player, with the DENON I actually used the WOW word more times than I could remember

I'm not a technical person but I know what I like

, and at times I know I can be very 'opinionated'

but what I saw in terms of Upscaling Picture Quality and heard in Stereo more than aroused and satisfied by curiosity......... and then some

DENON DVD 1940 is now £180 from Richer Sounds

SONY BDP300 £399 in SONY Shop, £299 in AMAZON

PS3 £350 and the SAMSUNG BDP 1400 which I fear wont significantly exceed any of the above machines is £320 Richer Sounds

For me....the DENON is therefore THE ONE!

PS: Is it true....that Paramount and Dreamworks have decided not to produce anymore Blu Ray?

Yes folks, we don't give Awards for nothing! The Denon is a damn fine DVD player for the money.

Re Paramount and Dreamworks - as we reported here back in August, they're going HD DVD only for the time being, thanks to a large donation from the HD DVD group.

Its great value. A friends son (not long out of Uni.) has one and I was more than impressed with the audio side. It would give many £200 cd players a run for their money. SACD too. Add on its dvd skills and it does appear a budget bargain.

I agree, I also prefer the picture on my Denon 1940 than on my PS3. The PS3 is good but I prefer the colour balance on the Denon, its brighter, sunny days actually look like sunny days wheras the PS3 seems to dull it down. I had the same issue years ago with a Sony DVD player. I also find my Denon more 3 dimensional and open like the picture "breathes" wheras I feel the the picture a little surpressive on the PS3. For what the PS3 does though it is a good bit of kit.

Yep...I know what you mean. i couldn't believe how anaemic the picture Casino Royale was when they were palying each other at Poker, via the new SONY BDS300 Blu Ray Player and as for the PS3, great games machine though it is, again I was not impressed comparing it to the £180.00 Denon.

As you say, with the Denon the pictures seemed a lot more life like in my view the colours far surpass that of both the sony duo
