I have been looking to buy a decent turntable to go with my Rotel 930 and JPW AP2 speakers. Richer Sounds are offering me £100 off as a VIP email member that retails for £299. is this a good turntable for and offer at £200 ?

Possibly, possibly not.

The problem here is its an automatic turntable, which is not a brilliant idea, with a built-in phono preamp, which you don't need.

Why pay for these unnecessary bits at the expense of the cartridge if you don't need them?

To my mind you would be better spending similar or slightly more money on a basic Project turntable if you are insisting on buying new.

Ok, thanks for that. I think I will give it a miss. I don't mind buying second hand if I were to get a good deal but I am a novice at turntables. Anything up to £300 I am willing to pay for the best I can get. Any suggestions on models would be greatly appreciated and I will have a gander on Ebay.

To be honest if you really don't know much about turntable then I wouldn't advise spending out on something from eBay. This can be a dangerous idea if you're not sure about set-up or cartridge replacement. For safety sake I would advise sticking with a dealer, for your first deck at least, who can set things up correctly for you. You will also have some warranty in case something should go wrong.

Buying second-hand is something I do but only on items I can actually get to examine before parting with cash and I am what you might call knowledgeable.

Although you may be lucky enough to bag a bargain I would not recommend it unless you have plenty of money in the bank.

Henley Designs actually have a couple of turntables up for auction on ebay at the moment. The items are used, may have been demo'd, so have the odd mark but they are offering 6 months warranty with them.

Have a look.

Thanks. The only thing with the Project is they don't have a speed switch which means taking the plate off and adjusting the belt whenever you need to play singles/12" That is a deal breaker for me.

This however looks promising ?
