Denon AVR1910 teething problems...

Hi all

Hope somebody can enlighten me here?

Got my Denon AVR1910 at 7:30 this morning. Have since wired everything up, run Audessey auto set-up, then disengaged the Audessey EQ function as suggested by the team, set to Direct Audio as I think this sounds best, and tested the amp with various Blu Ray discs.

Problem A: the Denon doesn't display the 'DTS HD Master Audio' icon. With the PS3 set to Linear PCM, the amp displays 'Multi Direct DVD'. Set to bitstream the amp displays the standard 'DTS' icon. I was reading elsewhere that any receiver connected via HDMI to a PS3 will not display the DTS HD Master Audio icon, but that this isn't a problem, the PS3 is still decoding lossless audio but can't bitstream it. Now I'm confused! Can anybody clarify what the situation is here? Should I be doing something different?

Problem B: I thought the Denon would allow HDMI pass through while on standby, but this doesn't seem to be happening. Surely I don't have to engage surround sound every time I want to play Pro Evo at 3am without disturbing the neighbours? Again, am I doing something wrong? Read through the manual and tried different options in the 1910's set-up menu, but can't seem to make this happen.

These may be naive questions, but this is my first foray into the world of HD sound, so if anybody can educate me here it would be hugely appreciated!

Thanks guys and gals...

Ignore this thread now, I've figured out the answers to both questions. Sounds great, & loving the 1910. Will hopefully sound even better once it's had time to settle in!

At least I thought I'd figured it all out...

The 1910 will only pass picture information through to my Panasonic 42G10 when the 1910 is on standby (and some surround effects). It won't pass through stereo data to the G10 at all. Basically, if the 1910 is on standby I can't hear dialogue on films through my TV speakers and get no sound through the TV at all if I play a CD. Should also mention that the source in each case is a PS3.

This doesn't sound like a major problem, I appreciate, but if I get in with friends at 2am and want to play Pro Evolution Soccer just using the TV speakers so I don't upset the neighbours (I live in a flat), I've got a problem. I know I can soften the effect of the receiver through the EQ settings, but I don't want to have to play every game in surround sound.

Just spent a fair amount of time on the phone to Denon tech support and they couldn't help, other than to say they think it is a compatability issue and to email them and they will investigate. But this could take a month, they advised.

I don't know if any of the more technically astute forum members or WHF staff can suggest anything?

Its hugely annoying, because other than this issue I think the 1910 is great. Watched excerpts from Drag Me to Hell and Wall-E and it sounded great -- a real leap in quality over my older Onkyo. If I can't resolve the issue, though, I might have to exchange for a different receiver.

So I take it that you enabled HDMI Control to enable pass.through?

This should have allowed sound to be passed through as well...

Have you experimented with the audio out options on the ps3?

Cheers Maxflinn. At least somebody's feeling sympathetic!

Superfi agreed to exchange if I can't get the problem sorted, so I'm now wondering whether to keep my old Onkyo and switch the 1910 for a Sony 760 Blu Ray player? Might be a good call. Can connect the Sony to my Onkyo through multichannel analogue outs so can still process DTS HD Master Audio, and the 760 should offer a leap in picture performance for Blu Ray playback over my PS3. Will lose a touch of detail in sound, I expect, and gain greater detail/clarity in picture performance.

Yes, unfortunately the HDMI pass through was enabled, and I've been through all the audio out options on the PS3 as well. Spent an age going through different setting on the phone to Denon tech support, and they were stumped. Wondered if any 1910 owners had experienced similar issues, or whether the WHF team noted any such problems when reviewing, but I guess not, given the lack of response. I suppose it could be a faulty unit...

Yeah, you could try the unit in their store to see if the problem persists there...

if you want to keep the noise down late at night , why not just set the amp to output 2 channel stereo ? the sub wont be engaged , just turn the volume down to a level you are comfortable with ..

i actually asked my neighbour to tell me when he could hear my speakers , while i turned up the volume , it was quite loud before he rang to say he could hear it , and i found a level that i now know he wont hear , even at 3am ..

Cheers guys.

I'll hang on for the mo and see if the Denon technical support people can solve my HDMI pass through problem. I'd still like a receiver that functions properly. If not then might opt for the Yamaha we discussed at length on previous threads. Curiously, the 1910 I auditioned in store had a few switching problems. Maybe this is a problem with the 1910...

I'm not sure you should assume that playing games late at night using sound via your AV system will be more 'noisy' than using the TV's speakers. You should be able to use a lower volume if you want, because of the extra clarity - that's what I find, anyway!
