Denon AVR-X4300H vs Yamaha RX-A1060

I'm currently considering these 2 amplifiers. If I go for the Yamaha I'd have to leave 2 of my ceiling speakers disconnected as it's only a 7 channel amp and I have 9 speakers (plus sub). However, I think the sound quality will be better than the 9 channel Denon and possibly a better match for my Monitor Audio speakers.

Both are the same price, but I can't afford the 9 channel Yamaha 2060/3060. I won't be able to demo them- I have heard the 3060 but with different speakers.

Anyone have any advice/suggestions?

Your best option for the money is Marantz SR7010, available within your budget:

I've got Marantz with Monitor Audio speakers, and the combination is superior to my previous Yamaha Monitor Audio combination.

Even the Demon will be superb, don't assume it'll be inferior to the Yamaha.

Thanks, yes I was disappointed to miss out on the Marantz 7010 at £899 from Peter Tyson, but sold out. The best they could do was the 7011 at £1150, but that is a bit more than I wanted to spend. I can get the Denon for about £900 so that seems like a good buy but a little concerned about the build quality and also I'm not sure how it will sound.

Yep that is true about buying online. I was just thinking that the next ones up the range ie the 6300H/7200WA have superior build quality as they are flagships so maybe the 4300 is not quite as good, or what I was used to with my old Pioneer 83. The Yamaha Aventage range always seem nicely built. Maybe I need to save a bit more to get something better.

You really need to get over your preconceived notions without checking out the Denon in flesh. The 4300h belongs Denon's premium X series range, designed to compete with Yamaha's Aventage range. So the build quality will be as good. Also, Audyssey is superior to YPAO.

Ha! Maybe you are right! Am I right in thinking the Marantz 7011 will be a bit better than the Denon 4300 or are they about equal? The only thing I don't like about the Marantz is the small display, with you needing to put the flap down to see all the info.

I paid full price for mine just before the 7011 was announced but no regrets. At the current discounted price it's a steal.

You can add power amps and / or chain it to your stereo to make full use of the eleven decoded channels also.

And I like the minimalist display. Far less distracting when watching movies.

The main difference I could spot between the 7010 and the 7011 was the addition of HEOS connectivity to the latter.

From what I personally understand of HEOS, it's kind of like Bluetooth but aimed at connecting speakers - that have to be HEOS equipped as well. Therefore if you don't want or need HEOS the 7010 will probably do all you will need.

As an aside, the 6010 and 6011 will do 9.1 ( or any Atmos variation) but you'll need a modest stereo power amp for two of the channels, or to route your fronts through a "proper stereo" to get the last two channels.

I've had the denon 2313, X4100 and now the x6200 and all good receivers and I have focal speakers and paired well. The marantz are pretty much the same inside. The denons/marantz are up there and good value for money..

Peter Tyson are very good and they will let you swap if you don't like the denon, but I don't think you will be disappointed..

Ok thanks everyone for their input.

I was considering the Denon x6200W after reading good reviews, and impressed with the build quality, but the cheapest I could find was £1099 which is outside my current budget.

I would have picked up a Marantz 7010 at £799 which Peter Tyson were selling them for before Xmas, but they don't have any left and the 7011 is £1150 (best price) which is a lot more to pay for few differences - Heos wouldn't be needed in my case.

I have gone for a Pioneer SC-LX88 via AVForums, not a bad deal at £750 with 3 years warranty left on it. It doesn't do DTS:X which is a shame, and it's not HDCP 2.2, but I wouldn't need that anyway. It does have Dolby Atmos so it will give me a chance to see how it works in my room - my speakers are not ideally positioned, but I will see how I get on with it and maybe keep for a year or two by which time other receivers will become more affordable.

Not having HDMI2-point-whatver-the-latest-is and /or not having HDCP2.2 could cause you problems with some Blu-Rays, especially 4K ones, and some streamed content.

Check it out before it's too late. Even if you only have a 1080p TV now, what will you have in 18 months' time?

I don't have a 4K TV now or a 4K blu Ray player, and no plans to get them for at least a year, maybe longer. The amp does pass through and upscale 4K but I think it would have problems with HDR content.

When it comes to changing my TV I would change the amp too. I am more interested in the audio side at the moment, and pleased it has one of the top ESS Sabre Dacs as well as Atmos capabilities. It should also match my LX88 blu Ray player as well, but I will see when I get it- not for a few days yet.
