Hi everybody.

I bought a Denon AVR 3802 some 5 years ago and until last week it all worked fine.

I am having problems with optical inputs.

There are four of them but I am only getting sond to my KEF Q5 speakers through optical output 2, the other 3 outputs are not sending any sound out at all.

Everything else is working fine.

I have both XBox 360 and PS3 so when I play games on XBox I have to move the stand hosting 43' Pioneer plasma, unplug optical cable,

plug it into PS3 to watch BluRay. For obvious reasons this is not something I want to keep doing on a daily basis.

Would you know why am I having this problem?

I read some comments on different forums and people are saying that when specific functionality of the amp is not working it could be down to the fuse.

I must admit I am not an expert when it comes to electronic hoping to get some advice on how to fix this.

I love the amp, I am getting really good sound with my KEF setup so any advice will be very much appreciated.

Thank you in advance.

Hi SuperMario

I purchased my Denon AVR 3802 some 8 years ago and only upgraded it to an Onyko 818 about six months ago due to the fact I want access to the latest surround formats ( DTS Master and Dolby TrueHD ).

Back to your problem here are some things to check:

I have checked the manual online and it shows only three optical inputs, the fourth one is an output, you haven't plugged one of your cables into this socket by mistake.

If you are only getting sound through optical input number 2, then to check its not a cable issue, have you tried this working cable in the other two inputs.

Finally have you checked the Digital In Assignment screen in the on-screen menu to see that the right inputs are assigned the optical option.

If any of this possible solutions does not fix your problem and as you say you are happy with the sound through your speakers, then you may have to get a optical input expander box ( available from Amazon, Maplins etc ) and use it through the working input.

Hope this helps and let us know how you get on.

Thanks for your response.

I was literally pulling the opticable out of all available inputs and checking the one sending the sound out, that is how I found out the one that works.

I was using the same cable so I would say I can dismiss the cable as the possible culprit.

I have tried with two other optical cables but the end result is the same, ony one works.

I have not checked that to be honest, I am planning to do that tonight when I get some time.

Your idea sounds very interesting, at least it will give me a workaround if the problem turns out not to be fixable.

I have done some more research and it looks like I am not the only one experiencing Denon problems like this.

Denon is not what they used to be, they are buying cheap parts assembling them in dodgy places.

I was hoping that if I shell out all that money I will get a good value for my mney but that does not seem to be the case.

Thanks again.

Hi SuperMario

Glad to be of help to you

I think I agree with you regarding the current state of Denon, this is why when I upgraded my amp I went for the Onyko as the similar model in the current Denon range had about half the inputs that I needed, plus the scope for any further upgrades ( adding external power amps ) was very limited.

I guess judging by other people that I was lucky that I had no problems throughout my eight years of ownership.
