Am considering either option as part of a - hopefully - new set up (in the process of buying a new place, haven't exchanged contracts yet but am planning the important stuff...)

Bit of a patchwork/work in progress; existing kit for the main room is Monitor Audio Silver (centre, 2x RS8's, 2xRX-FX surounds, RX-12 sub), blu-ray deck is sony X800, potentially adding another sub and another pair of surrounds but have another site visit friday morning to confirm whether the room layout will accomodate that. Would like to have 4 x ceiling speakers (am considering MA C380-IDC), and then 2 of those again in the kitchen coupled with a REL-Habitat and a multi-room amp (either Denon Heos HS2 or Yamaha WXA50, depending on what main amp I choose).

Both will sound great if they match with the rest of the system, but both will sound crap if they don’t match the rest of the system.

If you’re looking for a new system the only way is to demo various combinations, (A good dealer can help here) and when you come across one where you sink it to the sofa and forget about everything else except what you are listening/watching, then you have found your ideal system.

Don’t compromise on the above, as if you do, then the small niggle you heard in the showroom will turn into a major annoyance once you get the system home. (This includes looks unless you’re hiding everything away)

Hope this helps

Thanks Bill, your right, no substitute for a demo, though the speaker side of the equation is kinda fixed (can't afford to replace all the existing ones and but the new stuff as well!), am just wondering if anyone out there has experience of either amp that they could share? (in terms of what it's like to live with post-purchase). thanks

So you want to power a 5.1.4 system?

For MA, both Yamaha and Denon will pair beautifully, and Marantz. I would recommend you go for a 9 channel AVR if you're driving 9 channels (unless you have plans to accommodate a 7.1.4 system).

I had Yamaha RX-V1900 with MA Radius HD speakers in my previous house, and have Marantz SR7009 with MA Trimless 200 series of in-wall and in-ceiling speakers (WT280 IDC for fronts & centre, WT265 for side and rear surrounds, and 4 CT265 speakers for Atmos).

Trimless 200 series is a tonal match to MA silvers, and 300 is a tonal match to MA Gold. So CT280 may be better. You don't particularly need 3-way speakers for Atmos in presence of a good subwoofer, so you don't particularly need the IDC model.

That's really helpful re the ceiling speakers, thanks. Was looking at the 380's primarily as I had a concern about the power rating for the smaller ones (the 380 IDCs are rated at up to 150w I think?). If that's not a material concern then I'll have a look at the CT280's instead (woudl want a good tonal match with the existing speakers).

Am potentially looking at a 7.2.4 set up but that depends on room layout and whether the extra pair of rear speakers and extra sub can be accomodated. I'm due to visit the property with an installer tomorrow morning to run through everthing so will know more after that. If I do end up going 7.2.4 I'll probably go with the Denon as I think the Yamaha woudl need an extra power amp to drive that set up?

If I do go with the Denon I'm then considering putting a Denon HS" Heos amp in the kicthen to drie another pair of ceiling speaklers and teh REL Habitat sub.

Wil post an update tomorrow once I'be had another look round the property.

Thanks

^ Its got a flux capacitor and dilithium crystals too. :D

All a toroidal transformer is is a transformer where the iron core is shaped like a ring doughnut (or toroid as its called in geometry class). The shape is very efficient from a cooling perspective possibly from an electromagnetic perspective too (not my area of expertise granted) but really the shape doesn't matter so much as how many amps it can pump out.

PS if the ceiling has to be cut open to put in two speakers you might as well do four, or at least have the cables put in with small covers over small holes. If your budget is tight you can put in the front pair first, then add the rear pair later.

I used 12 AWG (about 2 mm2) 165 strand UL rated (which means the insulation is okay for putting in walls and ceilings) from Mediabridge via Amazon US. I paid US $42 for a 100 foot roll.

You can surely find similar from Amazon UK, Maplin or even B&Q (maybe) that will do the job. Buy it by the roll and save a fortune.

No need for swanky speaker cables for surround sound speakers, especially Atmos.

That might be stretching the budget given the price of some of the kitchen tables I saw my other half googling the other day, but let's see how that pans out...

Really good review on AVForums though, will definitely keep it in mind!

Thanks, agree re the ceiling speakers, I think four is ultimately the way to go and I don't want to have to go back and drill more holes/instal more cabling later so will probably go for four from the outset.

I should be ok for speaker cable as I still have a drum of QED standard cable from a previous instal, nit sure how much is left but am hoping it might be enough to do the job. Not sure about the insulation point though, is that something I need to think about? (I know ethernet cable needs to have a weatherpoof rating if you're running it round the exterior fo the house for networking, but didn't know this was an issue for interior cabling?).

Thanks

This is the denon amp I had in mind for the kitchen if I go with the 6400 - any thoughts?

https://premiersoundsblog.co.uk/heos-amp-hs2-review

If RS are giving away a free Heos speaker as well then that's the spare bedroom sorted!

Currently use a Dali Katch in the kitchen but that's going in the main bedroom if we get the ceiling speakers and amp installed in the new kitchen.

Thanks
