I'm a DIY'er and I simply built a OB speakers using a pair of Morel tempo speakers, and they far outperform even the laughable Monitor Audio BX2 speakers which in comparison sound like they have a large Duvet over them.

£100 isn't going to buy you anything respectable. I'd sooner get on ebay buy a pair of Alpine SPG or SPR speakers, get a few slabs of MDF and you'll have speakers that will slay anything below the 300-400 euro range!

What does MDF mean? And why would I buy those things? I don't know how to build my own speakers, I just need to buy ones that are already built. I was looking at Harman Kardon Soundsticks III, I tested them in a store and they sound good, but I've read their build quality sucks and people had them and it stopped working after a year. So do you know of any alternatives?

Medium-density fibreboard. I don't think you will get much for a £100. Best to save up a bit more or buy some used ones.

For how much money can I get decent/good speakers and which used ones would you recommend me? Also, do used speakers have a higher chance of dying than new ones?

I see you want active or powered speakers, in that case I would look at pro music shops online, Thomann I believe cover your country, plenty of those on there, think you can get something reasonable for around Euro 160. Just be aware that some are sold as single speakers not in pairs. For a desktop the Mackie CR3 maybe ok. If you want more bass then you will need big drivers.

This is possibly the benchmark for inexpensive powered speakers in the 'mainstream'.

However they are, depending on your market, about twice your stated budget, so you have to think differently.

As pointed out above Thomann in germany will have plenty of options, take a look. spend as much as you can, at this level a few euros makes a lot of difference.

Hi Dragonsword.

In Soest, by RMR, they have a new brand of actives, Steljes NS1 and NS3. Till june 1 they are at a discount. 139 instead of 199 euro's for the small ones.

Haven't heard them but they don't sell rubbish.

http://rmrsoundsystems.nl/steljes-audio-ns1

But they're only 100 - 20 kHz

Denon SC-N8 are 70 - 20kHz

Are the Steljes Audio N1 better than this

http://hificorner.nl/speakers/boekenplank/denon/boomboom-460-denon-sc-n8-zwart

and this

Stores in the Netherlands don't sell the Audio Engine 2, they only sell the Audio Engine A2+ which are 280 euro.

I just read somewhere the Audio Engine 2+ have bad highs, is that true?

Probably.

But they are still better than pretty much anything else for the price. Ie the others options are worse!

Are they better than the speakers I mentioned before and are they also better than the speakers on Thormann.de? The Q Acoustics 2020 have a good review on this site, but what about the 2010?

http://www.thomann.de/nl/behringer_ms40_multimedia_lautsprecher.htm

Why do they have holes in them? The woofers are 4 inch, are they big enough to have enough bass without a seperate subwoofer?

I've also seen these speakers

http://hificorner.nl/speakers/boekenplank/q-acoustics/q-acoustics-2010i-walnoot

No I did not mean those, have a look at Mackie MC4, read the reviews. The holes are probably bass ports, not sure why 2 though. Will they be enough with sub, its it to you but for around £100 you are asking for too much. How are you going to position them? The Q Acoustics 2020 will need amplifier I believe.

Ok I can buy a subwoofer later. I am going to put them on my desk without speaker stands, next to my computer and monitor. I can buy an amplifier as well, if speakers and amplifier won't cost much more than 200 euro. The Mackie MC4 won't have enough bass so I probably won't buy them.

But I've seen a deal with Denon speakers and Marmitek Boom Boom amplifier, is it a good deal or not? I posted it in one of my earlier posts. I can get both of them for 188 euro. Also, what about the Dali Zensor Pico?

I think some of the ones from Thomann come with isolation pads which will be ideal for your desk. 4 inch drivers nearfield on a desk maybe enough bass, if not you can add a sub later, or you can buy 5 inch drivers. Never heard of that amp, think you are better off with powered or active speakers to be honest these are design to go together for music studios they are more likely to be a better match than some unknown amp and speakers.

If you can find them in your market, take a look at the Acoustic Energy Aego M.

This is a full 2.1 system, subwoofer and satelites from a respected manufacturer, currently available for just £129 in the uk. Still over budget though.

Otherwise check out the Thomann website, plenty of choice from the likes of Alesis, Behringer, M-Audio, Samson etc. If you can stretch to €200, try the M-Audio BX5 or the ESI Active 05, much, much better than the cheaper options.

If these don't do it for you then I have no idea. Good luck.

I can't find the Acoustic Energy Aego M anywhere here. And I want to listen to the M-Audio BX5 before I purchase them, hmm I'll have to find a place where I can do so.

Have you listened to those speakers? And do you know if they are better than the Denon SC-N8 and Q Acoustics 2010i?

But they cost 130 euro instead of 100 euro there. I have found 2 stores which sell them and I can return them within 14 days if they aren't good.

Yeah, but if I can pay later and return them within 14 days of purchase if they sound bad then I can also hear them first. And the store in the link you posted is too far away, it's only in Amsterdam.

I forgot to mention I will also use them for games 1 - 3 hours a day.

I think 100 Hz is low enough, because you probably put them close to a wall so you will plenty of bass. I haven't heard the steljes, only saw them on internet. The other speakers, I don't know them either.

If the name of the amp is BOOMBOOM I would have my doubts about it's capabilities. If you you want to buy online, go to Thomann or baxshop. Otherwise, go to mediamarkt and have a listen there.

If you want to spend your money now, do it. If you want good sound based on a informed choice, have some patience, listen and in the meanwhile save some more money.

Good luck.
