I am all set to buy my first home theatre package. I was looking for a good surround sound system. According to wikipedia [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Surround_sound#Standard_speaker_channels], "5.1 Side"speaker configuration 'is the correct speaker placement for 5.1 sound reproduction from Dolby and DTS systems.'

Here in Dubai, the local distributor is offering a package deal on Denon 2310. He has bundled 2xBP7006 + 1xProCenter1000 + 2xProMonitor1000. Unfortunately, he did not have the demo setup, so I could not sample. The sale price is 8000AED, roughly 2180USD

What do you guys think? Will the speakers be a good match for the receiver? More importantly, is the price OK - or should I get just the receiver and look for another set of speakers?

Help a newbie here, please.

Please are you able to provide a bit more detail on the speakers in terms of manufacturer and so on?

It may be a bit difficult for people to comment as to me at least it's not totally clear what these speakers are.

Agreed!! More info is required if you want some help with this setup, without knowing what speakers you refer to it's very difficult to advise.

Hi Balaji,

I have not heard this model from Definitive Technology, but I used to own a set of their speakers myself and they are very good, the build quality is second to none and the customer support is excellent.

Sound wise some can be a bit in your face, but the more expensive models receive very good reviews.

Professor, thanks for posting the links to the manufacturer's web-site. did'nt do so myself as I was under the impression that Definitive Tech was a (well)known brand in speakers.

I saw good reviews of the speaker on the web. But what I wanted to know is whether it would match well with the Denon 2310.

Hi,

Going by my Def Tech speakers I would say yes, ran mine with a Yamaha and the a Denon 1909 so the 2310 should be a good match.

The Denon is a warm sounding amp and as I said before the Def Tech speakers can be on the bright side, so the two shouls match very well.

Michael - So the combination is good subjectively.

If I see the specs of the receiver, it says :-

Power Output; Watts Per Channel 105

Specs for the ProCenter1000 :-

Rec. Assoc. Ampl.: 10 - 200 watts/channel

So the center speaker will be driven with only 50% of its rated power handling. Does it not make the speakers a bit under-driven? Also from the speaker's installation manual :-

"Usually if distortion is heard when the speakers are being driven at loud levels, it is caused by driving (turning up) the ampli?er too loud and not driving the speakers with more power than they can handle. Remember, most ampli?ers put out their full rated power well before the volume control is turned all the way up! If your speakers distort when you play them loud, turn down the ampli?er or get a bigger one."

Is this not saying that the ideal power input to the speakers should be close to 200W.

Please bear with me, I am just trying to figure out the numbers.

Thanks for any replies.

Don't be too put off by numbers and specifications - I'd suggest if you ever get anywhere near the amp's full rated power of 105W per channel, it won't matter if the speakers are damaged as you'll be deaf!

The key advice there is listening for distortion - if the dealer can't offer you a demo (and I can never think of a good reason as to why they couldn't if product is in stock), then get their word that this won't be an issue and that they will be happy for you to return them if you find yourself in this situation once the speakers have been fully run in.

I placed the order for the system. the local dealer said they are out of Denon 2310, and they are giving me the Denon 2311 at the same price. Seems like a good deal to me.

Thanks for all your replies.

Balaji,

The Denon AVR-2310 has a warm tonal texture and I suspect it will be the same with the 2311.

Be careful in matching the right speaker package with it, i.e., a sonic character that compensates/compliments this sound or you will end up with a system that sounds muddled and flabby.

I got the delivery of the system today. The receiver is inscribed 2311BKE2, not sure what the suffix is....

Still undecided about the speaker placement though. My room measures 19'x13'. On 1 of the lengths, there is a 4' wide doorway. On 1 of the breadths, there is a 7 feet window. My screen size is 42". I am thinking of the following 2 layout options, hope you all can see the images.

Which one would be better?

The 2nd option looks better to me. I have a similar placement, except that the rear speakers are near the ceiling corners (the right one above the doorway) pointing downwards. See my home cinema pics.

But even your speaker placement will sound excellent.

The Def Techs will make an excellent match. As "lifestyle" speakers go, these are much better than KEF, B&W and Monitor Audio equivalents. The passive ABR drive units will help to give a good sense of body to the sound without sacrificing detail. Just remember to allow at least 50hrs of running-in before listening critically!!!!!

I finally installed the system, and ran the Auto-setup. For some reason Audyssey chose to put the following channel levels :-

FL: -3.5 db

FR: -3 db

C : -4 db

SW : -12 db

SL : -3 db

SR : -3.5 db

With the manual set-up, I chose the volume control to be "absolute" i.e. 0 to 99. I find that to get a decent amount of sound on blu-ray, I have to crank the volume upto 95!!. I changed the channel levels to 0 db for all channels, which gives me more SPL [I now listen at level 85) but the levels are not-so-subtly inconsistent i.e. the surround channels give more sound than required, in some scenes overpowering the center's dialogue delivery.

Should I keep the auto-setup settings, and keep the volume near to the max all the time?

Rather than putting everything back to zero try increasing All the levels a set amount say 5 therefore still using the audyssey settings, so yours would now be,

FL 1.5

FR 2

C 1

SW -7

SL 2

SR 1.5

have a go with that see how you get on volumewise

Hello stu, I entered the settings you suggested. Still, I find that frequently I am turning the volume to 0db for a good cinema experience.

Would it help if I got a separate amp like the emotiva xpa-5 here? Link: www.emotiva.com/xpa5.shtm

Hi there,

I used to own a full complement of Definitive Technology speakers, BP 3000 towers, BP3000CLR, BP8's and BPX got divorced and myex got the speakers. All i can say is that DEf Tech speakers are awsome. I used run mine with Lexicon processing and bryston amps, wife got those to!!!!

Def Tech are a huge American brand and not well known out side of the states. If the price is right I would whole heartedly reccommend them!!!

I currently have a Denon 3310 and know that the DEf Techs would sound great with it.

Hope this helps
