IMO, the Pioneer. But didn't the Sony W4000 win the recent supertest? And the ultimate guide to TV also featured the Sony W4000 as the category "winner"? So why not feature the Pioneer as the "winner" if it is still the best?

Oops! Sorry! I must be getting absent minded...;-)

But strange that Pioneer would ask for a model to be excluded when stocks are still available. Also, couldn't they just continue to manufacture the sets if they are still in high demand? Or is it because the new LCD models will enable them to enjoy even higher profit margins? Don't understand their business model.

And I was also lucky enough to get a Sony W4000 for free after I bought the Pioneer so I'll be getting rid of the Sony and keep the Pioneer for myself! Even though I'm actually tempted to keep the Sony as a "spare".

Resolution is just one aspect of a TV.

Yes, agreed. You can't really notice the difference in resolution unless you really make it a point to stare at the outlines and sit pretty close to the TV set. Also, while LCD technology has caught up, I still noticed some minor smearing on the Sony when watching a dark action scene. IMO, I think the design/build quality of the Pioneer also seems better than the Sony.

Try both with a good Blu Ray. The difference between FullHD and HDReady is quite noticeable.
Once BluRay becomes standard, a FullHD screen has more than twice the resolution...

I watched Pirates of the Caribbean and Casino Royale on the 50 inch 8G Pioneer Full HD and HD Ready sets on the Pioneer Blu-Ray player and I could hardly tell the difference at all when viewing from a sensible viewing distance. And IMO, unless you're really concentrating hard to see the difference, it is not really noticable as the images are moving all the time. Now, I guess results will vary if you're comparing versus other brands as not all TVs are created equal even though they share the same "HD specs". And it also depends on your eyesight... 🙂
