I have a 750Gb MMaxtor external hard drive. I dropped it and now i just get a clicking sound and my laptop doesnt recognise it. A brief look on the web suggests this is a mechanical failure.

Does anyone know of a data recovery firm that are reasonably priced and do a good job?

Your drive certainly sounds kaput.

Data recovery from a physically broken disk (as opposed to just messed up at a partition level, for example) is horrendously expensive, and is certainly going to cost you more than the drive - just how important is the data?

Quite important. I make music and everything ive made in the past 5 years is on it. Sentimental more than anything. I can rip the hundreds of cds again. Ive had a quote of between 4 and 600 pound.Does this sound about right?

Thanks reggaedave. i spoke to Andrew. Nothing he can do. Its goin to cost a fortune. I can think of better ways to spend around £500 at the moment so its goin to have to wait till im flush. Thanks for the info though!
