Dali Zensor 3 cabinet, rattle inside

Hi,

When pushed, my Dali Zensor 3's have developed a slight rattle from bass frequencies from somewhere within the cabinet. When I mean pushed, I'd say halfway volume on my yamaha 85 watt amp, with the bass eq at 3 O' Clock. It affects both speakers. The speakers otherwise are perfoming perfectly - no distortion etc, and of course, the rattle is all but gone when I decrease volume or bass eq.

Whether this was always present or I just picked up on it I do not know. Does anyone know how to open cabinet to inspect if something is perhaps loose? There's no obvious screws on back of cabinet.

Any insights appreciated...

i doubt there is anything loose, your probably over driving the speakers especially with the bass boosted, halfway with the volume knob could be close to full volume.

'Halfway volume' (if you mean the volume control is turned halfway to around 12 o'clock) is usually a bit more than where most modern amps are producing their maximum - unclipped - power (some start clipping at around 10 - 11 o'clock on the volume control). Add in the extra bass ("3 O' Clock") and I think you might be hitting the maximum travel of the bass drivers.

Appreciate the replies. Is it likely this is now damage caused by pushing them or they're just operating outside their parameters? They're in a large space, probably too large for what they are, hence I was driving them as such...

if your driving dali 3s that hard at 3 o'clock no wonder why they are rattling they are still a small speaker which can handle 120 watts i had a pair and i only took the volume upto 12 o'clock sometimes which is plenty for them speakers or your blow them up

Sounds like you're driving them outside their comfort zone. It also sounds like you need some larger or more efficient speakers to suit the space.

but the bass started to get very loose and out of control. If you like the Dali's I would go for an amplifier which will control them a bit better when you turn the heat up. If you decide to upgrade the Dali's I think you'll eventually find that the Yamaha is good but not quite good enough, as I found with the AS500.

Check all the screws are sufficiently tightened.

Not only around the drive units but also around where the binding posts are round the back.

Maybe worth checking for tears too on the drive units.
