DACMagic + I-pod??

The Wadia itransport dock is the only thing that bypasses the ipod's own DAC so that you can use an external DAC, see it here . It is quite expensive, but hopefully similar stuff will get the license from Apple that allowed Wadia to make the dock. The only alternative is to attach a PC with itunes to a DAC.

And that definitely bypass the ipod DAC?

It bypasses the whole ipod. The ipod does not come into it at all. You can download itunes for free and then use it as your means of managing music on your PC, which then digitally sends the signal to the DAC.

Ah yes, good point, ta.

Could you, regardless of the presence of itunes, use the ipod as source, throught the pc, into a DAC, and still bypass the ipod's?

Unless it is used with the Wadia itransport the ipod will output an analogue signal, not a digital one. So unless there is a programme and hardwear out there that allows you to connect an ipod to a PC to extract the digital data to then pass it on to a DAC then no. Though actually there is one such programme and hardwear; itunes and the Apple supplied cable to connect your ipod to the PC! So we are back to just using itunes. Sorry, but I do see another alternative, Apple have been clever to limit how the ipod can be used.

Thank you idc for your answer... it's better to forget i-pod via DAC as Wadia is quite expensive and over my budget..ÿ

I think you're right. However, connecting your solid state ipod to your pc/mac does give us the possibility to compare solid state with hard disk. I recently discovered by accident that an ipod connected by usb to a pc/mac can be controlled by itunes. Just connect the ipod, select your ipod in itunes. Select the "music" folder under your ipod's name. Now you're ready to select any song on the ipod.

Edit: just realised it isn't a equal comparison, as in this situation the ipod's dac is (probably) still being used. Bummer.

Superaintit, the ipod's DAC is still 'in the loop', the Wadia is the only device out there at present that bypasses the ipod's DAC. I use an ipod as a source for space and convenience. I am working my way towards using my PC as the source. An ipod plus Wadia seems very expensive for something that in effect makes the ipod a memory stick just holding the music files.

Now I am probably way off, but is there such a thing as a powered memory stick type device that could be used to send a digital signal to a DAC? Or are we back to the answer is 'yes, its called a computer!?'

No, but why would one ever want to?

By our own admission al and I are not the most technological of blokes, so sometimes we have little asides as we try and catch up and do a little knowledge check.

Sorry, didn't mean to come across as sharp, but the best solution is just to have a dock cable and connect iPod straight to hifi, and there you have perfect portabililty.
