If you are interested in seeing a cheaper, DAC-less Sonos Connect to provide a digital only output for your AV amp, dedicated DAC or actives with inbuilt DACs then you may want to support this idea over on the Sonus forums.

I take it you are then? How much do you think this would actually reduce the cost of the Connect by? I'd guess no more than about £5, in terms of components. It isn't worth the effort.

Not sure what the benefit would be. It currently has a digital out

Would however be interesting if this could support hi res out of the box (assuming the current DAC inside Sonos is the reason it only support CD quality - there are modded ones that can take hi res)

I suspect it would put the price up, since they'd sell fewer of them.

Sonos' biggest seller by far is the Connect:Amp, by the way (or so I'm told by a dealer).

More than the Play units, i find that hard to believe.

Yes, more than the Play by a multiple, according to the UK's largest dealer. Perhaps Clare would know, as I could easily have misunderstood/misinterpreted.

Connect:Amp is certainly a popular product - several thousand sell in UK every month - but Play:3 is the SONOS biggest seller. And I hear that the Play:1 is the fastest-selling launch product in the company's history...

Obviously individual dealers will sell different combinations, so their experience may differ!

No, there really aren't. There are modded ones that can be set to output at 24-bit BUT they still do not support 24-bit audio, they're simply upscaling the 16-bit audio to 24-bit (for no good reason that I can think of).

There's a first time for everything. Admitting you're wrong, that is.
