I have a Pre XPD with an X Power, Kef IQ5SE speakers. I'll be upgrading the speakers next year, but have some funds now and wondered if i'll see more improvement if I add a PSXR to both pre and power amp, or should I add another X power and run both in Mono ????

Thoughts please.

I'll be interested to hear whether you get any benefit from adding a PSX-R to the X Power. I'd expect you wouldn't. Adding a PSX-R to the Pre XPD should produce a significant improvement, as should getting a second X Power.

But as David says, borrow a PSX-R and try out the different permutations.

I expect adding another Xpower and running in mono will be a bigger step up, but no harm in trying the PSX-R first (on loan) then deciding.

PS. Its' a small step (but expensive) from two Xpowers in mono to two Mono X300s :)

The itch will be there, so the PSX-R may be the safer option.

+1 What Dandy says. Extra X power to run in mono is probably the best bang for buck move. But if you can borrow first no harm in trying all the permutations.

Is it better to run in Mono, or both in stereo to Bi Wire ?

I haven't tried either, but in theory I'd have thought mono would be much better. Interested to hear what others think.

After much deliberation, I got a PSX-R and added it to my Pre XPD. I actually found that whislt it smoothed things out, I lost the attack. I disconneted and added it to my X-Power and found a much better improvement. Bass was much smoother and an overall improvement in sound. Now looking for another x power and PSX-R, but then might try 2 mono X's.........

I went down almost the same road except I got the second X Power first then the PSX-R 's. Using the X-Powers in mono gets the best sound for my ears. I did try the Mono 2 / 3 and the 300's were just amazing but to rich for my budget and to my ears the X-Powers with the PSX-R were about the same as the 200's and it allowed me to get the set up in stages rather than one massive outlay which is why I went down that road.

i think the law of diminishing returns applies to hi fi more that any other hobby, apart from fine wine, as the distance between a £300 amp and a £1000 one is huge but after that you need to spend a load of cash to get the same jump. I realise that hi fi shows are not the best place to judge kit but I have listened to £50k plus set ups that are probably only just twice as good as my mid range cyrus set up. However if I had £50k to blow on a hi fi I would!
