My brother is repeatedly telling me it us the best amp ever made and will blow the socks of a £6k amp today.

I assumed he owned one and was a bit biased. But re-reading your post, you didn't actually say.
There could well be an aspect of it's performance that someone might prefer when comparing to any other amp.
But I'd be amazed if it would 'blow the socks off' the Cyrus xr-i7 I currently own -or indeed the Cyrus 8 I owned before that.....let alone an amp at 4 times the price.
(I have heard one but can't remember how it sounded)

Hi, this is interesting question. I was so curious about Cyrus One some 8 years ago that I have purchased nice well preserved Cyrus One for me. I have had a lot of tube, hybrid and transistor amps in last 30 years. Cyrus One has his own personality. It sounfs fast and detailed. It has also very good soundstage and quick but not very deep bass. Rock, guitar and acoustic music sounded very good with him. It has less power than is today typical even from small amps but those watts ate serious. Cyrus is also very well built, my was with metal casing and proper casted cooling radiators for heat generated by end stage amp in it. Yes and even it was 30 years old it worked flawlessly. Even volume worked, no problem. I loved this amp in combo with my small Xavian Delizia floorstanders. On the other hand combo with B&W 610 was not very good...(speakers...). Small Dynaudio Emit 10 sounded very good with Cyrus as well. That all was valid till I tried Rega Brio mk6 at home. Brio was a real step up in sound quality even Cyrus was defending his position till last breath. At the end I had to choose amp for second system and it was Cyrus, which has left😪. But I loved Cyrus a lot. New Cyrus 40 amp or "fullsize" Cyrus 80 amp are amazing amps, just lot more expensive. And No, old Cyrus One will not beat new modern amps in 6.000,- £ teritory. I have now also nearly new Rega Aethos integrated and this amp is amazing. A lot better than Brio but very similar in many aspects, they have "family sound". Cyrus One was also big joy to listen like Rega amps. It just needs more care with selecting the right speaker. BR.

I own a Naim amplifier, bought for about £1,100 eight years ago. Brother says a Cyrus one, £130 on ebay will blow the socks of amps costing thousands.

This idea is valid like Donald Trump's claim that he will stop war in Ukraine within 24 hours when elected. Has not happened as we all know. I think your Naim amp may give a lesson to the Cyrus as well. What I forgot to write, Cyrus One was not very good when combined with high sensitivity speakers. My old Cabasse Iroise 500 with some 92-93dB sensitivity were too much of good thing for Cyrus. This combo was shouting and screaming when louder. On the other side, Brio was here lot better. And combined with Rega Aethos, it is pure magic. So used Brio mk6 for some 300-400 Eur is better amp than Cyrus One. I can put my finger to the fire...

If Cyrus One is so good why do whathifi give it only 4 stars ?

For the money i think my amp wiim vibelink is really good, i can't think of one amp for under 400 euros new that is better (i use digital out from my streamer so the amp has to have that and no big amp)

So i will keep using my amp

Hi, here in this thread, it was discussed the first Cyrus One, produced in 1980ies. For many like me the only real Cyrus One. I hope they make one, one day again. BR.

It was mentioned, "found on ebay for 130£". I found my Cyrus One for some 160Eur some years ago and tested it. There are lots of fairy tails about this oldman's Cyrus One from my childhood. It is often celebrated till heaven. But you know not everything is true. I checked myself, my way. But I have respect for this amp. 😅

The modern Cyrus One is a Class D amp. I had the One HD and found it very enjoyable, to the point I regretted parting with it. It was certainly one of the best modern amps I've owned.

The original Cyrus One, from the 80s, is something of a legend like the NAD 3020, and a used one in good condition, fully serviced and recapped as necessary, can certainly compete with modern amps up to a good price. It is easy to make claims beyond its capabilities however, and the only way to assess is with your own ears. I'd expect to pay more than £130 for one that has been given the full attention an amp of its age deserves.

I consult what hi-fi these days to have an idea of not what to buy
And the better the review result, the more convinced I get not to buy that product.
Use it as a recommendation list but the other way around 🤣

As others have mentioned, I believe the thread is talking about the original Cyrus One from the 1980's.

As for the four stars, What HiFi stars are price related, so a £699 (as the Cyrus was in 2016) would have probably been better than a £500 five star amp.

HiFi is a very personal thing. From what you have said before, you like your amp for the power output and the room correction. Other people value other features.
