Hi all,

I have been offered a new Cyrus 6A amp for a semi reasonable price. Any users of this amp care to discuss please? Would be using it with B&W 685 S2 ( which I have decided to keep vs Dali Zensor in my other post). Currently using a NAD D 3020 which is very good but maybe just a little under powered for the 685's. Then again the Cyrus is not much more powerful. I have been offered a full refund on the NAD D3020 by the dealer to trade in against an opened yet unused 6A with full warranty.

Not much info outside of WHF about this amp, what I can find indicates this particular combo might be a bit on the bright side. Detail, clarity, tuneful full bass and very good bass punch would be my desired criteria. He also mentioned that the Cyrus has slighty different binding posts, it uses a different type of banana plug I believe he mentioned? Reluctant to go cutting my terminated and sealed cables for a demo without some feedback.

Thanks!

To cover your final point, yes, Cyrus use BFA speaker plugs. They come with the amp. I did reterminate my. Chord Epic cables with them, but you can get adaptors for 4mm banana plugs, or so I hear.

Secondly (or is that firstly, now :p: ), I use the 6a in conjunction with B&W CM1 speakers. I don't find it overly bright, or clinical. Current Cyrus isn't that of old- heck, I've paired the current Cyrus offerings with Kef and Monitor Audio, and it sounded excellent as well! I also wouldn't worry about power output. Whilst it is only 40w (conservative measurement) into 8 ohm, it has a chunky enough power supply to deal well with my CM1s when they dip to 5.1ohm. I think the 685S2's minimum impedence is 4ohm though.

Give it a try. I think you'd do well with it... until you get upgradeitis!

Thanks, worth a try if I can get my hands on those adaptors. Trying to give upgradeitis a good kicking into submission which is why I want to purchase above my wallets comfort zone. Have acheived that with the 685 S2 so looking for an amp I'll be happy with for years. Then again maybe I already have that with the D3020. It's my first amp so not sure where it stands in terms of sound quality vs other amps. Maybe ignorance is financial bliss!

Well, with Cyrus, as I'm sure you know, the system can 'grow' with you. So from the 6a, you can upgrade it to have a DAC, more power/PSX-R capability, or both. This is done for the price difference plus a service charge. It's exactly what I'm doing- I'm aiming for an 8a and PSX-R, but when I bought my 6a, it was discounted, so when I do upgrade, it won't cost me overall any more than if I bought the 8a in the first place. I think it's a great scheme, personally.

Cyrus like Naim can take a number of upgrades. I am not sure if that's the best way to go if you want to kill your "upgraditis"… I'll be looking forward to knowing how your find the Cyrus in comparison with the Nad.

The Nad and Cyrus IME are sooooo different in terms of tonal presentation.
