Hi All,

Have got my Panasonic DMR-BW500 BluRay player connected to my Denon AVR-4306 receiver. Currently I have the Pana unit set to 'Secondary Audio' which outputs everything as LPCM via HDMI. Is this the best setting given that my amp does not decode DTS-Master and Dolby HD etc? or are am I better off using the 'User' setting with 'Secondary Audio' turned on - I think this outputs everything as Dolby Digital Bitstream.

G'day Damien, as far as I am concerned, with your current set-up, choose "Seconday Audio", because I am sure you play Blu-Ray Discs, and the best way to enjoy the uncompressed audio with your current set-up is to have Linear Pulse Code Modulation (LPCM) via HDMI.

Hi Dantan, yeah we have been watching BluRay and I figured LPCM was the right way to go - I've had it set like that since I got it - just been tinkering since I got the new panel on Friday. Hey, what kind of tv / monitor are you using? I've read some discussions on upscaling regular dvd's and some say to let the panel do it, others to let the player do it - any ideas how you work out which is doing what or if you can tell what type of signal the panel is receiving. At the moment I have the Pana tuner/BluRay set to output 1080p so I guess its doing all the upscaling.

Hi Damien, I have had my Sony KDL52W4000 52-inch Full HD LCD TV for almost four weeks now, and have been extremely happy with it. I was tempted to go the whole hog and purchase a 50-inch Pioneer Kuro, but ended up going for this unit.

In terms of whether the source should be doing the upscaling or the screen to do the upscaling, it really depends which item you feel has a better in-built upscaler. Personally, I feel that it makes more sense to upscale at source level - however, seeing that you have a Pioneer Plasma, I would dare say that your Pioneer Plasma would have a better on-board upscaler than your Panasonic's tuner/Blu-Ray Player.

Unfortunately, I don't know how to confirm whether the screen or the source is upscaling. I don't even know for my set-up which one is doing it!

Hmmm, interesting. Yes, I looked at that Sony model too - both great sets. Do you get any buzzing from yours? The first one I had delivered on Friday was very loud - I told Pio and they brought me a new one yesterday. This one is much quieter though I can still hear it to some degree - going to live with it for a week or so and see if I get used to it - apparently its considered 'normal' for plasmas to buzz to some degree - how much is the question. Seems odd to me. Cant complain about the picture though - its sublime.

I figured the same with the upscaling, just have no idea how to set it - I guess I have to set the Pana unit to output 576 but whether it will then do this for all sources, I'm not sure and I certainly don't want that. Hmmm.. That said, the standard DVD pictures are already excellent so I'm probably wondering about nothing.

No, I have not noticed any buzzing from my TV. The only minor gripe I have got of my Sony KDL52W4000 is that it sometimes produces soft crackling noises when I switch my TV off. It must get fairly warm, after extended use, I guess. Otherwise, it is a wonderful TV, although I am kicking myself, as it appears as though there is a W4500 version being released, which has the 100hz Motion Flow technology from the X and XBR range-topping models. D'oh!

It is only natural, to keep wondering how we can maximise the performance of what we have already got. After all, we have forked out a lot of our hard-earned money, and not spending enough time fully calibrating our gear and getting the maximum out of our gear would be a gross disservice to ourselves.
