Connection question between HI-Fi components

Hi, my cdplayer (yamaha cd-x397mk2) has an Audio Digital Output, my Yamaha stereo-receiver supplies only he standard RCA analogue connections. So I have conected both components with the RCA cable.

Now my question: What's the use of an audio digital output on a cd-player?

For connection to a CD recorder, for example, or an AV amp.

Would it not also be used for connecting the CD player to an external DAC, therefore bypassing the CD players DAC??

Or am I thinking of something else?

Most digital stuff nowadays have optical outputs inc tvs digi boxes dvd's computers etc etc, so a good quality external dac is a handy thing to have.
