connecting media player to av receiver

Hi,I don't know if I'm posting this on the correct forum but want to know if I can connect my recently purchased mede8eer 450x2 media player to my onkyo 609.I have movies in various formats and a lot of music in mp3 and flac resolution,should I connect via the hdmi to the amp,do I need a dac for the music?
