Connecting Headphone Amp To Denon RCD-M37

Hi and help!

I'm considering purchasing a headphone amp (Pro-Ject Head Box I1) but the Denon doesn't have "Tape Out" for connection. You can, however, connect a tape deck, MD recorder, etc. through "Aux 2", so can I connect the amp through the "Out" socket there?

I have been in contact with Denon about this, and although there response was "Yes", it did not come over with a great deal of certainty about it so just asking to double check here.

Thanks in advance guys.

Hi Sizzer,

You got a problem with the built in headphone socket on your 37? I know some have reported a 'hum' when using that socket, though it doesn't happen on mine.

Had no cause to try out your solution, but can't see any reason why it shouldn't work.

No problems with the headphone socket, although I know there have been reported problems here and elsewhere (a twiddle of the jack seems to solve it for some).

Apart from wanting an improvement from CD (and I'm not complaining about current SQ), I am having a bit of an issue with SQ quality from movies. Spot on through the speakers but seems rather flat and dull through the 'phones.

This is what passes for a manual that I can find, It states there are two sets of analogue inputs and outputs, which does not look right as there is one set of each, but the headphone amp should work connected to aux in. It may also work connected to aux out. Such a connection is designed for a pass through signal that allows you to connect a recorder to record off the signal inside the amp from radio, CD etc.

Certainly the MF X-CAN amps can be connected to such phonos. You can either use both connections (so 4 phono cables needed) to provide a pass thorugh signal, or just use the one (so 2 phonos needed) and the head amp becomes its own selectable source, like CD etc I would keep it simple and use the one connection.

Many thanks for the reply idc, but, hmmm..... a bit technical for me! lol. Maybe I should re-phrase the question.

According to the Pro-Ject manual, you connect it to "Tape Out" which the Denon doesn't have. So, which way are you suggesting? I'm not concerned whether it's 2 inputs or 4, just want to know if I can make it work.

Sorry if I'm being a bit (very?) slow, so should I be looking at connecting through "Out" in Aux 2 where a tape deck etc. should go as I originally thought?

The Project manual here http://www.project-audio.com/inhalt/en/manual/manual_headbox.pdf has the connection as if it is using the signal loop for a recording device (cassette etc). I dont under stand why it does not just advise you connect it to an amp in the same way as you would connect a CDP, tuner, video player, cassette etc.

To be totally non technical, it will work connected to your amp, ot else you would not be able to connect anything to the amp. Exactly which connection I am not sure, but go with Projects advice and connect to 'out'. If that doesnt work, try 'in'.
