Budget no quibble? See Wadia - £350. There are others for sure, but it's apparently the best one money can buy.

iPod docks are all extremely overpriced considering that the best sound quality is obtained by using a simple line-out cable.

I use Apple's own £15 dock, which came with the lovely Apple remote, but sadly will only charge via USB from a computer.

Personally I would take a look at Richer Sounds. They had an excellent deal on a Cambridge, and if that's no longer available then there must be some well-priced Jap alternatives.

Do not buy an rDock.

Oh dear, oh dear, oh dear, to quote Andrew as he once did to me (maybe justifiably so :)) - don't you just love forums?

I'm doing exactly that Eddie - I'm buying an rDock. And if you think it's too pricey in the quest to get the best out of the iPod's built-in DAC then you'll be horrified to know that Meridian have released a more expensive dock.

And I'm so sure you've heard the rDock right?

Anyway to the OP, I will post my rDock results as soon as I get it. I'm loading my iPod with Aiffs though - call me paranoid but on my Vista PC at least I don't think Apple Lossless sounds quite as good. Fingers crossed.

Manicm,

I'm sure the OP will disregard your thoughts on the rDock because anybody who perceives a difference between Apple Lossless and AIFF could also imagine other sonic differences that also do not exist.

The rDock is priced in accordance at what the Arcam target market will stand. Given that Arcam products cost many times more than the rDock, purchasers do not mind adding a relatively inexpensive item to their shopping basket when purchasing a system.

Integration with the Solo products is quite neat, but the remote control navigation takes a little learning, and the labelling of the iPod input as "tape" is not particularly intuitive. Then you sit on the sofa a few metres away and realise you cannot read the track names on the screen!

If you do now own Arcam Solo products or the new DAB tuner then you cannot use this "functionality" anyway, so are wasting a big part of the dock.

I have no doubts that you will perceive the dock to sound fantastic though, as you did with lossless files!

Let's disregard AL vs Aiff - that's not what my post was about.

The other leading UK mag did a group test of docks and the rDock was best after the Wadia's DAC bypass method. So by dismissing my views on the matter you dismiss WHF's and all other reviews of the rDock as well. So no changing your opinion there - in your mind the rDock is just not worth it right??

2ndly, about the 'Tape' connection issue - to even say you're making a mountain out of a molehill would be still taking you too seriously - the rDock can be connected to any free input to any hifi - and in the case of my Solo Mini there's an input which is clearly marked 'iPod/Tape' - so in your esteemed opinion you still think Mensa membership is required to connect the rDock right??

3rd yes - the rDock might not be the last word in convenience but which one is???? Name me one??? And at least it will still charge the latest iPod Classic 120g which I have.

Assuming one is aware that an iPod is not the ultimate hifi source, it's inherently convenient like any other digital solution in that no more changing CDs - isn't that the point? And last time I checked in a PC/DAC solution you still have to walk up the PC.

Manicm,

It is a poor approach because you cannot read the Mini's small display from the sofa! Think outside the box.

The better approach is to plug an Airport Express (£65) into the Solo Mini and use an iPod Touch (£165) on the sofa as a remote control via Remote App (£0).

I would be interested to know how the rDock sounds better than anything else? The mag's should use a line-out cable as a control experiment. That is the most short and simple connection. The rDock cannot "add" sound quality; all it can do is not lose sound quality, and add some functionality.

What if I'm sitting on the armchair?

The rDock is not black (and the remote facilities only apply to Arcam kit with Arcam remotes and RS232 connection to an Arcam. The OP has a Cyrus.)

I am not sure why it is still being discussed.
