i have a dedicated room that will be used for tv films and gaming with limited music use around 4.2m x 3.6m

i like the look of a samsung 55" plasma but completely lost as to what audio system to get.

dvd will be through the ps3

budget is around £1000 ish depending on spec

would like wall mounted speakers 7.1 with seperate avr and ipod connection would be nice

listened to a few in a curries mega store but they all sounded the same to me denon, yamaha, pioneer avr's through harmon kardon speakersbut the assistant did admit none of the systems where calibrated but still recomended an onkoyo think it was the tx-sr608, as it had thx sound technology, and the bose speakers, but he thought the HK speakers wheregreat value at £270 is this sound advice?

i usually only buy once so want to buy the best i can afford at the time but struggling as i am starting from scratch with nothing to compare to.

any avr speaker packages recommended??

cheers

HA Ha! didn't note the wall mounted bit!!!! try these:

Cambridge Audio Minx range OR Lusso - richer sounds

Mission M cubes

Boston Acoustics Soundware XS 5.1

Sony HTIS100

Q acoustics 2000 range

All under £500 mark, Choose one of the Amps from the thread that has asked about the Onkyo 608, Yam, pioneer, Denon and you cant go wrong, add on cables etc.

Think there is gonna be a review in WHF next month on the amps. Look through old threads as i am sure someone has asked this question before. Most will say go and have a listen so if it's convenient then do so.

As i said, i'm no expert as i've only started my setup at Xmas. But this is the kind of thing you should be looking at. You could spend as much as you want at the end of the day so just get the best within your budget. We can all suggest to buy B&W's/KEFs etc.

Good luck, let us know what you choose.

they look excellent in the oak but struggling to find the br range in anything but black or walnut, so will have to save up for the new bx6-av, priced up at 1300 for them plus the yamaha avr

the room does have an oak floor with off white walls so should look nice.

thanks for the help

I would recommend you to buy a 5.1 system first, & then get the 2 extra speakers at a later date when funds allow. That way, you'll be able to buy a better system for your budget. There aren't many films with 7.1 audio.

What style of speakers do you want? Small (like Mission M cubes) or large?

Currys / Comet is not the place you should go for buying a good 5.1 / 7.1 separates system. Where do you live? Go to a specialist retailer who has a dedicated demo room to compare (not in a corner of a busy store!), like Sevenoaks, Frank Harvey Hi-Fi, Musicraft, Home Cinema Centre, Moorgate Acoustics etc. Even Richer Sounds is better than Currys. Specialist retailers tend to offer better advice & arrange demos for you. Also, they can give you better deals than the advertised prices if you're buying the entire system from them (like Sevenoaks offers 15-30% discount on speakers if you buy an AV receiver from them.

I agree. You are not going to get good advice from Currys/Comet. one of the above companies or a specialist independant hifi shop is the place to go. FOC knowledge and good advice is priceless and could help you save some money and grief.

Imho.....5.1 speaker setup and if you've bought a 7.1 receiver then you should be looking at bi-amping your front L/R speakers. So buy a pair of front speakers that you can bi-amp
