i HAVE A PAIR OF GOLDENEAR TRITON 7 SPEAKERS CONNECTED TO A SONY STR DN1080 RECEIVER. WOULD IT MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN SOUND QUALITY IF I UPGRADED THE SONY TO A CAMBRIDGE AUDIO CXA81 AMP.

ONLY YOU CAN JUDGE IF THE DIFFERENCE IS INDEED AN UPGRADE !

I haven't listened to your speakers or the Cambridge Audio amp you refer to, however as a rule of thumb a decent two channel system will sound better than a surround system used in two channel mode. So there is a good chance it will be better (for music). However, I have just googled that amp, it costs £800, there is a lot of competition in that bracket, have you been offered one or is it just something you have just earmarked. Try auditioning one along wit some other similar priced competitors.
