Id like to give the insides of my seperates a clean-out. Just to clear the dust, fuzz etc out that has accumulated over the years.

What do I use? And what processes do you all use?

Thanks

Unplug from the mains before taking off the outer casing (of course). Then take a deep breath, lean in, close eyes and blow very hard! ;)

You can use a vacuum cleaner from the outside - this will probably get rid of 80% of the dust.

If you open the case, you'll probably invalidate your warranty on the spot - though if it's that dusty, it's proably out of warranty.

You can use an air spray (I've got one for my camera) to blow out the hard to get at spaces, without getting a faceful of dust, and circuit boards covered in spittle if you go the open case route...

I use a vacuum cleaner with a hose for cleaning the inside of dusty PC's. I'd use the same thing for cleaning dusty hi-fi components.

If you're opening cases then don't touch anything inside with your hands. Caps can hold a charge for some time after being disconnected from the mains.

My preferred method is to loosen anything stubborn with 1/2" paintbrush, then blast it out with a can of air duster, preferably outside!

Remember that power amps have substantial capacitors in them which can give you a shock even after the mains is disconnected.

Thanks peoples

Cool, well it's a 1995 system so prob out of warranty by now.

Ive got a soft brissled, new 1" paintbrush, and have ordered a can of air (seems funny actually saying that)

I won't touch anything, and shall be as gentle as I can be with the brush.

Thanks for all of the replies :)

Make sure you keep the can mostly upright otherwise the liquid gas can also be sprayed out as a (very cold) frost. It's also a solvent in liquid form.
