Looking for advice from more experienced members - I want to give the phono plugs a good clean to get rid of any oxidation which might be present. However, my local chemist would not not sell isoproply alcohol to me because she says "it is now tightly controlled", she offered to sell me surgical spirit instead. Would the latter do the same job or might it erode the phono plugs? Anyone with experience of this? Thanks in advance.

I use Russ Andrews Deoxit kit. It lasts for years.

It cleans and seals, I have used it on everything.

After many years in the service industry, I can highly recommended Servisol switch cleaner for waht you want to do.

It's an excellent contact cleaner, and yet to cause any stains on plastics etc. that I've used it on.

In my opinion, it's better than alcohol for what you're wanting.

Have to laugh at what it says on the tin..

"Chemically improves electronic connections"..... - now if only ALL contact cleaners did that

And it's 4x the price of the Servisol product - all because of the "Audiophile" label no doubt!

Personally I like Andrew's solution, 'cos once you're finished cleaning, you can sit back and relax with the left overs...

Indeed - and all those cleaning products warn against using too much, so you only need a teensy tiny capful to clean all your plugs and sockets, and then you could spend the rest of the evening watching The Hunt For Red October and singing ??????????????? ???? ?????????? ?????????...

Altogether now....
