I agree with both statements above: it is up to manufacturers to market their product, and research before you buy.
Bullitt,
I don't agree with a lot of what you've said on this thread, as I pointed out above, regarding retailers to blame etc. I think my point about samsung having an lcd and led section on their site clearly shows that marketing strategy comes from them (which is obvious really), and as stated above there are many benefits to these led backlit lcd tvs (calling them led backlit/ sidelit? lcds is quite long winded) so I have no problem with them calling them led, and since i'm not one to impulse buy a tv without research, there's no problem.
Where I do agree with you, to some extent is in buying wherever is cheaper. I appreciate Purify's arguments of keeping people in jobs and it's always better to have a store with whom you can deal and develop a customer relationship, which is good for customer care.I bought my tv, blu ray player and cables at sevenoaks and felt more comfortable doing that and testing before buying.
BUT,
where there are significant differences in price, I think it's fair to buy where it's cheaper. We're a consumer based economy, and the market dictates. Retail stores have to compete with online shops, at a considerable disadvantage, so in order to survive they have to be able to offer value, which can come in the form of customer care. Ultimately your wallett and piece of mind will decide.
Which takes me onto another post on the home cinema section about this very issue! I went for the cheaper option (online) for blu ray discs - it came down to £9.99 v £25, I'm afraid there was no added value in paying that much extra.
