led tvs cost a little more than conventional lcd tvs , the benefits are deeper blacks and better contrast , which samsungs latest led tvs have , wheres the problem ?? just research and buy what you like ..

And further im not jumping on any band wagon ive always had that opinion of currys because ive had first hand experience with them, they should all be called manuel cos they know nothing,( joke !)

I agree with both statements above: it is up to manufacturers to market their product, and research before you buy.

Bullitt,

I don't agree with a lot of what you've said on this thread, as I pointed out above, regarding retailers to blame etc. I think my point about samsung having an lcd and led section on their site clearly shows that marketing strategy comes from them (which is obvious really), and as stated above there are many benefits to these led backlit lcd tvs (calling them led backlit/ sidelit? lcds is quite long winded) so I have no problem with them calling them led, and since i'm not one to impulse buy a tv without research, there's no problem.

Where I do agree with you, to some extent is in buying wherever is cheaper. I appreciate Purify's arguments of keeping people in jobs and it's always better to have a store with whom you can deal and develop a customer relationship, which is good for customer care.I bought my tv, blu ray player and cables at sevenoaks and felt more comfortable doing that and testing before buying.

BUT,

where there are significant differences in price, I think it's fair to buy where it's cheaper. We're a consumer based economy, and the market dictates. Retail stores have to compete with online shops, at a considerable disadvantage, so in order to survive they have to be able to offer value, which can come in the form of customer care. Ultimately your wallett and piece of mind will decide.

Which takes me onto another post on the home cinema section about this very issue! I went for the cheaper option (online) for blu ray discs - it came down to £9.99 v £25, I'm afraid there was no added value in paying that much extra.

HMTB, i appreciate and respect your view, but all i wanted to know is was there a difference between LED or LCD and if there isnt why are they marketing them in this way, i was none the wiser what the difference was, currys was only relevant to the question because someone at my workplace made me aware of this, that is all. It wasnt meant to turn into a who is to blame argument or any argument for that matter.

THANKS.

I take it you're satisfied with Andrew and maxflinn's explanations, and now understand the difference?

C'mon guys, it seems pretty obvious what Bulllit was asking and that he was not attacking Curry's for the marketing. (Although I can see how this can have been interpreted)

I think the question has been answered now though so job done

Thanks messiah at least someone can understand where i was coming from, its amazing actually that someone quoted the first post i put up and derived from that, that i was having a go at currys, but i suppose thats the problem with txt, email etc.. that sometimes things come across not how you intended, i was a bit shocked the stick i got because most of the time people on here are very helpfull.

Anyway thanks for all who replied, got there in the end.

Mind you, where I strongly disagree is with the idea of going to a shop to examine the goods, have a play, etc., then nipping off and buying it online cheaper.

The online retailers are cheaper because they don't have to support sales staff, buildings, deliveries and so on, and in many cases direct aftersales service rather than you having to return the product to a manufacturer.

So to use some of those facilities as a showroom with every intention of buying elsewhere is simply unethical, and will lead to a further demise of 'bricks and mortar' retailing. And then where will you use as a showroom?

BULLITT, YOU WERE RIGHT ABOUT THE 3D, IT SEEMS SETS MAY BE COMING OUR WAY FAIRLY SHORTLY (2010). I READ AN ARTICLE ON IT IN THE PAPER THIS MORNING. I WONDER HOW THEY'LL RESOLVE THE SCREEN ISSUE, IN THAT YOU WOULD NEET A MASSIVE SCREEN TO GET THE IMMERSIVE WOW FACTOR YOU GET AT THE CINEMA (WHICH IS ALWAYS GOING TO BE BETTER)? I APLOGISE IF YOU FEEL MY COMMENTS WERE UNDULY CRITICAL, IT CERTAINLY WASNT MY INTENTION TO OFFEND/ ANTAGONIZE. SORRY ABOUT THE CAPS - NOT SHOUTING - JUST CANT TURN OFF THIS SETTING ON MY PHONE.

very true , i say buy local , its better for the long term , the cheapest option is not always the best one , i think manufacturers should charge online retailers a bit more to level up the playing field ...

I AGREE! THE PROBLEM WITH MANUFACTURERS INCREASING THEIR PRICE TO ONLINE RETAILERS MEANS THEY MAY SELL LESS TVS -SO IT'S NOT IN THEIR INTEREST TO DO THAT.

Love the fact you can't turn off the caps on your phone - it's just like the way mobiles make all those idiots scream 'NO! I DON"T HAVE A PAIN - I SAID I'M ON THE TRAIN!!!"

JD's got an iPhone (as does Nelson Mandela but that's another story...), he should be able to tell you what to do. I seem to recall he posts here from his iPhone quite a lot and never seems to have this issue.

when i first get on the input text page it works as normal, but once the page finishes loading, it goes on auto caps. the only way to write in lower case, is to press shift before every letter which would take for ever.

If someone can tell me how i can turn this off, that would be great.

I understand what your saying but whats the difference in me going to currys or any other shop whether its for a demo or just to see the TV ive been looking at online for the past 6 months, when i can purchase it cheaper online, why would i pay £100s more just to be ethical ?

My previous TV i had was the 42"thpx60 it was £400 pound cheaper from digitaldirect compared to currys, i do actually remember asking whether they could match that or work some sort of deal but they weren't interested.

Just an idea why not put currys on your where to buy section !

I AGREE, IF YOU CAN SAVE YOURSELF A FEW £100 THEN BY ALL MEANS BUY ONLINE. I WENT TO LOOK AT MY TV IN JOHN LEWIS BEFORE I BOUGHT IT, WITH EVERY INTENTION TO BUY ONLINE, ALTHOUGH THE 5 YEAR GUARANTEE WAS TEMPTING! WHAT I WOULDNT HAVE FELT COMFORTABLE DOING IS EXTENSIVELY DEMOING THE TV IN A SMALLER RETAIL SPECIALIST SHOP AND THEN BUY IT ONLINE. THEN AGAIN I PAID ABOUT THE SAME INSTORE AS ONLINE PLUS GUARANTEE, SO LUCKILY I DIDNT HAVE TO PUT MY ETHICS ON THE LINE FOR £250!

The tv ive got now the Pana PZ81 i saved for six months read all the reviews from WHF that i subscribe to then because the only thing left was to view, i did so in currys just browsed i didnt go through all the what, how and where because i didnt need to, its just to see it in the flesh and obviously look at the price to compare and i don't really see whats so unethical about that when its my hard earned cash on the line, no brainer as far as im concerned.
