In the US you can now get the 1947 original Edmund Gwen and 1994 David Attenborough remake versions of A Miracle on 34th Street and the 1951 definitive Version of Scrooge with Alistair Sims

Now here we are 6 weeks away from Christmas and you can't get them in the UK unless of course you buy them as US imports from the likes of Amazon but if you do they won't play on our Blu Ray Players or PS3's

This is crazy! Why can't the film companies just make all Blu Rays and DVD's region free

Some are indeed already Region Free so why can't that set a precedent for them all being Region Free

Alternatively why not make all Blu Ray Players Multiregion...Period!

I am not sure I want to see a David Attenborough version of A Miracle on 34th Street. The RIchard Attenborough Blue Planet wasn't up to much...

Hi I'm not being funny with you but whether you want to see a remake of A Mircale on 34th Street or not with David Attenborough is an irrelevant answer to my posting

Yes, but I was being funny with you. A Miracle on 34th Street was directed by Richard Attenborough not David. David is his brother who makes TV nature documentaries (amongst other things)

Sense of humour failure, Tallyho - you've got your Attenborough brothers mixed up, was the point....

Shoot! Apologies...hammill and Clare

To differentiate between them in future I will have to remember:

David...Tall and Slim

Richard....Short and Tubby which of course bode him well for the role of Criss Claus

No worries. I do agree with you by the way. Although I have a multi-region DVD and Blu-Ray, I think region encoding is a right royal pain.

Yeah Yeah..I know!

Even mispelled your name Claire but went in to edit as Clare above just in case you spotted that too

Can you actually get Multi Region Blu Ray players and if not is there a viable alternative to make something like a Sony BDP-S360 for example Multi Region

You can indeed, they're generally a bit more expensive. Have a look here (NB - note that some are only multiregion for DVD, some are multiregion for both Blu-Ray and DVD).

The alternative is to look on the likes of eBay for kits which you can install yourself - the issue is making any player multi-region will generally void the manufacturers' warranty so I'd advise buying from a dealer and ensuring they will offer an equivalent warranty to replace the one from the manufacturer.

You have been away a long time! How quickly they forget...

I'm really not sure you meant to come acros the way you did there. If you did, its totally unnecassary.

Welcome back Prof, and im sorry that a fuss has now been made.

Errr, I'm really not sure how you think I meant to come across? I think...

What I meant was the Prof has been away a long time if he thinks nobody here will make a fuss of him now that he's back. I'm not sure how that could be considered unnecessary, it was downright affectionate, coming from me at least...

Welcome back Prof, and im sorry that a fuss has now been made.

It's a good fuss for crying out loud, I'm just telling the bloke he's going to get a "welcome back" whether he wants it or not!

Honestly, how would anyone take offence at that?

Given the original idea of regionalised DVD's was to stage releases of the latest hollywood blockbuster, ie film shown in america first, then 6 months later the tapes are sent to european cinemas and the DVD released in america so they didn't want europeans having the DVD's avaliable at the same time the film was on at the pics, what is the point of releasing older movies with regional encoding?

I gather DVD's sold in poor countries reflect "local market rates" to put it an eloquent way, but that doesn't make much odds in US v. europe.

In fact are movies still released in stages to continents like they once were?

Thomassteele:

According to http://bluray.liesinc.net the 1951 Christmas Carol film with alistair sim is region free. And is £12.55 from Axelmusic.com.

Thomas steele Thanks for this information..I will check it out...

You know..Your screen name..Thomas Steele..uncanny!!!

I saw Tommy Steele at the London Palladium a few years back in SCROOGE THE MUSICAL...it was absolutely great..Good old Tommy Steele at his very best! You're not the real Tommy Steele by any chance are you? Hmmm I wonder!

Tommy Steele has once again been touring the UK in his role as Scrooge in the same production having just finished in Manchester and this weeks the show is at the Empire Liverpool..The final week of the show starts on Sunday 30th and it will be at The Mayflower Theatre in Southampton...Steele is brilliant in the musical version of Scrooge

DJEpson...I now and again go onto the Movie Time site from Philadelphia in the US to see if I can check out what is and isn't Region Free...However the 1951 film didn't show..besides their Blu Rays are too expensive

Ah yes, that sharp bend where, as the 65 bus groaned round it in first gear in case a truck was coming the other way, a ripple of whsipers always went through the upper deck; 'That's Tommy Steele's house'...
