chord odyssey speaker cable question

Chord won loads of awards for it from 2001 - 2005, so it is well regarded in the press and by us people at home.

Well, my two 3m runs turned up at work today, and most unprepossessing they look unjacketed.

Visually unspectacular, but sonically? I will have to wait and see - there is an outside chance I will be able to play on Saturday, but otherwise it looks like another 2 weeks before I'll really be able to do any proper sound checks.

They haven't even been used (the seller made a measurement error when making the original purchase) and are terminated at one end only.

JohnNewman:Fraz1:Depends on your speakers i think. It is a v good cable but i found it to be too bright with monitor audio or epos speakers. They both have metal tweeters though. In a neutral or warm system and with speakers without metal tweeters it could be a superb choice. I'm not sure where I read it (so I may be wrong), however I have read in the past that Monitor Audio use Chord cables when developing their speakers.

I used to have a set of monitor audio RS1's, and a friend still does. He used chord odyssey with them and they sounded brutal.Unlistenable they were so bright. That has been toned down noticeably with a switch to a solid core copper cable.

I think that is the speakers rather than the cable. Does he have Cyrus/Roksan kit too?

Sorry to hijack.....

I'm currently using Atlas Equator 3 with a Marantz PM7003/B&W 685 combo, I'm quite tempted in swapping to the Odyssey, anyone any opinions?

I find it very neutral. Not as bright as QED SA XT but with no less detail, and more open than 6mm copper which I found dull.

The Atlas has more bass when I tried it, but the oddy is a more rounded cable

Marantz ki sig cd player and arcam alpha amp with power amp ( cant remember which model). I think it was mainly the speakers but the odyssey didn't help.I have heard odyssey sounding superb i would just be careful when paring with a bright system or metal tweeters.

Really. Maybe they use Chord cables which are further up the chain, such as Chord signature. Or (more likely) my source was wrong

Brutal? Bright? Well, thus far I can say I find them neither in my system.

As I said, my initial impression was somewhat underwhelming. At approx £15/m, unterminated, I was expecting something more substantial. True, I had not really given thought to the unjacketed aspect and, when they arrived, I had to do a quick check on Chord's website to reassure myself I had the real thing!

Last night I got the unexpected opportunity to try them out. I hurriedly completed the terminations with some ready-to-hand basic plugs and hooked them up.

As underwhelming as their appearance? No way! Bearing in mind that I had disconnected bi-wired QED SA XTs to try the Odyssey 2x2 cables, I was gratified by the result.

At this early stage I am willing to say that the Odyssey pair easily matches the QED (well, at approx twice the RRP it should, I suppose). The high end seems to be just that bit clearer, airy and delicate. The mid range is smooth and balances nicely. The lower end arguably tightens up a notch or two, but may, just may, have a little less punch to it. Certainly, I was aware of a wider (and deeper) soundstage but with everything in its rightful place. Previously, although the sound was good, I got a feeling of greater density to the overall sound. Or, rather, with the Oddyssey's in place, I am now aware of a greater sense of separation between the components that was previously absent.

On this basis I cannot wait to both listen again and maybe get hold of another pair of 3m runs to try bi-wire (or even bi-amp) configurations.

Oh, and I just checked back: the QED bi-wire cost me £21 from Fleabay back in early 2009 - thats roughly £45 less than this Fleabay purchase. Worth it? We'll see - some may say not, but thus far another step up in quality for under £50 seems not unreasonable.

Based on the good write-ups on this thread I got some Odyssey 2 today - bargain offcuts at just under £13/m! (I was actually demo'ing speakers and since the first ones that blew me away came in at circa £600 - Acoustic Energy Radiance 1 - then the cable seemed cheaper by quite a long way.) Anyway, it replaced bog-standard copper cable.

Have only used CDs I'm well familiar with to try to get some sort of (admittedly unscientific) comparison, but first impressions are that the presentation appears more transparent, with some depth I hadn't heard before, even on well-known tracks. Transients I think are more obvious and precise even at low listening levels. Acoustic guitar seems very natural. I could see why some might think it brightens the system but personally I like it and it seems to me to present plenty detail but in a rather smooth way. Haven't been able to crank it yet but should get the chance later this week.

I feel I can echo Athenry's summation. After further listening, I believe the Odyssey is coming along very nicely - there certainly seemed to be more weight and depth to the sound. Similarly, I have yet to give the cables a decent work-out, but that is to be remedied before long.

I picked up a second pair of Odysseys the other day for approx the same price as the first, but fully terminated, jacketed and burned-in. Should be with me tomorrow. So I should be back in the bi-wire scene and even try the bi-amp possibility before Easter. I am looking forward to trying out all my new toys very soon.
