Hi folks,

Thinking of chagning my cd player before it is to late, at present I am running a Rotel RCD965BX as my CDP, BUT It's ageing now although in mint codition it may soon start developing faults so I want to buy a CDP to put in it's place in case of catastrophe.

I was looking at the Pioneer Stable Platter Mechanism range, my dad had one years ago and I always fancied one cause they are different, from what I remember the sound was very nice too. However would it match up to the solidarity and sound of my trustee Rotel ?

I was looking towards the PD-S 700-800 range. Any Ideas or gripes about this type of player ?

I used to have the 703 - a lovely sounding CDP at the price point. Sold it last year after a good many years of faithful service. Well built, reliable and very pleasant to listen to. I vaguely recall purchasing mine on the strength of a WHF review.

I hope it is giving its new owner plenty of joy.

Mind you, for somewhere in the range of £60+ you can snare yourself a splendid Marantz CD63 MkII KI Signature (saw one go the other day for £62 plus P&P on Fleabay) - even better!

if your cdp is working well, use it till it eventually packs up .... save in the meantime so that when it does give probs, you will be able to replace it with something new that is decent, and that matches your amp and speakers

does not help buying an old pioneer that is just as old as your rotel, as that too may fail shortly

Dim_span is, as usual, talking sense. What vintage, indeed, what are your other components? You may want to consider holding on for a while and saving money for an upgrade using more modern/new kit.

If the Rotel still sounds good it might be worth looking at the next step up and planning accordingly? I agree that it would be very irritating for the CDP to fail on you, but with the help of the WHF magazine/website you could quickly replace it if you put some plans and research in place ahead of time.

Happy planning and shopping!

Yes, I managed to give it a listen earlier in the week. I posted my initial impressions in...er, I forget now! I had hoped that today would be a day for a proper try-out, but it wasn't to be (someone is playing truant). So, in summary, I said that the A400 actually gives the Audiolab a run for its money BUT on first listening I am finding it maybe a touch strident. I really need another chance to do a comparison. [Ah, found it, see: "Re: Place Your Bets Gentlemen, Please" @ 18-03-2010, 8:09 PM].

I'll keep you updated. I understand that I will have a couple of hours on Tuesday and then my four consecutive evenings the following week.
