Hey Guys

My trusty Lektor 2 are soon to be promoted to 5.1 duty so I need some new speakers for my stereo set up. I was thinking the floorstander route as I want a full bodied sound with plenty of weight in the lower mid range. I would also like them to be able to keep with all the transients of fast paced music.

I am considering the Lektor 6’s or the B&W 684’s. But probably will be keeping my little Marantz for the time being. So will the amp be able to cope with wither speaker or will it be totally out of its league?

IMO you'd be best to look to upgrade the amp if you went with either of those speakers; the amp would do an OK job but it wouldnt drive the speakers to their fullest potential.

If you dont want to change amp then maybe take a look at the Monitor Audio BR5's or a pair of the Monitor Audio RS5's via eBay and the likes

Superfi are doing a cracking deal on the Epos M22i floorstander - £1100's worth of speaker for £650. If that's a bit steep, then you could get a hold of the brilliant Q Acoustics 1050i (which will deliver a low end clout and a half) for less than £200 from the same dealer, or the current line's 2050 by the same manufacturer for £370.

Thanks for the replies. I have looked at the RS5's before, is it not considered to be a bass light speaker?

I have also looked at the Q Acoustics before as well, but would this not be more of a downgrade compaired with the Dali's?

I forgot to say that the Acoustic Energy Neo 3's would be worth looking at as well but the Q Acoustic 2050's would be a good fit too.

The RS5's arent bass shy but they dont go as deep as the RS6's but they are deeper than your current Dali Lektor 2's due to the larger cabinet etc...

I hear the Q's work well with the likes of Leema's Pulse amp which is around £1200. Might not be true that it will work with every amp in that price range, but that's going to be true of any speaker. Like I often say with these speakers, don't let the low price put you off. Might not be for you, but I've heard enough to know I'd shortlist them to try out at any rate. The Epos would be pretty decent too I think.

The Acoustic Energy Neo 3's look really nice, have you heard them?

Out of the 1050/2050,RS5's and the Neo 3's which ones would best go with the Marantz?

The problem is the only two hi-fi dealers in town do not stock much apart from Dali,B&W and Neat,so i would not be able to hear any of these speakers before i bought them.

I am a little bias but the Acoustic Energy Neo 3's are superb.

and I have articulated this on ciao if you wish to look

The RS5 is not bass light. However, the Silver series is not the best match synergy-wise with budget Marantz. I would also suggest avoiding Mordaunt Short (albeit they promote and distribute each others products). I would say Epos is a good match but the entry-level floostander is probably an overkill.

The floorstanders I'd recommend is either Kef IQ5SE or Monitor Audio BR5....

I you want cheaper floorstanding speakers that work well with bass, have a look at the B&W DM2 ... easy to drive, but work best with a 100 watt+ amp

approx £250 will get you a good pair (3 way transmission design)

the record spot:Superfi are doing a cracking deal on the Epos M22i floorstander - £1100's worth of speaker for £650. I've demoed the Epos M22i's with a Marantz PM6003/CD6003 combo recently at Superfi and they were superb, wonderful detail, nice bass, and to cap it all they looked beautiful in Red Cherry. I think its only the Red Cherry and Maple that are going for £650, the other finishes are a good bit more. I was listening to Santana's "Caravanserai" and it was spectacularly good.

.

The Epos M22i's do sound rather interesting, but i won't be buying the new speakers for about a month so they'll proberly be back up to over a grand by then.

The Neo 3's seam intresting as well. Anyone who has these have any comment on the bass?

Epos make really good speakers, but I do think they'll be a total overkill with a budget Mararntz.

I've heard the B&W 684's with a Rotel RA-04(not much difference in price!) and they sounded really good it was a nice full sound and as I was looking for bass they certainly had plenty.I threw all sorts of music at them from Dance to Acoustic, Pop, Rock etc and they seemed detailed, clear and crisp.

Although I then stepped up in price to the RA-06 and then RA-1520 which drove the same speakers even better, I think if you get the best speakers you can afford now it leaves the door open to a future upgrade in the amp department at a later stage.

(I actually settled on some 683's in the end as they have even more bass but it was a close call!!)

Steve I have wrote a long and detailed review of the Neo 3's on ciao check it out

Hifi Newbie - Just read your review, It really helped alot thanks. In the review you mention that listen to rap and rock music, have you tryed the speakers with dance or Dnb? And do you think the speakers will work with the warmer Marantz compaired with your nad?

Many Thanks

No problem, well I have on here ATB and Pendulum, I think they count as Dance and Prodigy have a techno/dance/dnb so that probably counts to

. There is plenty of attack from this type of music to, bass lines are articulated well with a real slam to the music. The energy of the tracks are brilliantly reproduced on these speakers definitely.

Awesome thnaks. These speakers are starting to sound just like what i'm after. They are also cheap enought for me to perhaps be able to change my amp aswell. Did you listen to the speaker before you bought them?

To be honest no, it was dan and co who recommended them, it was because they were cheap that i took a chance on them. Prior to these speakers I owned the Monitor Audio BR2's and although I really liked them, I yearned for the room filling sound of floorstanders while not getting something that was going to sound too big for the room but had plenty of gusto and slam to them but which didn't overshadow the other frquencies and I am thankful that I have found exactly what I was looking for.

Your amp won't struggle to drive them if that is what you are concerned about, likewise they aren't particularly bright, so they won't sound out of place with your amp. The best thing to do would be to hold your horses, buy whichever speakers you decide upon first and give them a few days to bed in with the amp. If you decide on these though, I do definitely recommend you have them a bit away from the side walls and back as i mentioned in the review

Unfortunately I'm in Huddersfield and do not drive. There a great price though, thanks for the head up.

I think i will give them a try, like you say there cheap enough to warrent a try at least. I start a new job working for a universtiy in september so my plan to change my amp and maybe speakers again then anyway.

Aha, yes, Huddersfield is a little more than a stones throw from there

I highly doubt you won't be pretty damn thrilled by these. If you lived closer I would say you are welcome to pop round and listen to them but since I live on the borders of staffordshire perhaps not lol
