Hi All
I’m running quite an old system mission Cyrus 3 plus pxr Ruark talisman speakers and an arcam alpha 5 cd player which has just given up the ghost, could replace with like for like second hand but interested in other second hand options but a bit newer maybe around £450 ish.
Reasonably happy with the sound this set up gave but open to suggestions for a better cd player

Welcome to the forum.

There is a vast range of CD players available within your budget, both used and new.

You could do a lot worse than a newer Arcam, as they’re usually made popular and reliable players. There are several of the discontinued but very nice FMJ series in budget, so just search on eBay for an idea of the choice. These include the later SACD/streamer models like the CDS50, newer than the FMJ.

For a bargain, find a local item that the seller won’t ship, as that enables you to see it, and avoid postage risks.

Arcam is a good choice but the OP really needs to see it as second hand CD players can be prone to failures be it belts or lasers.

New is good, just because a second hand one is working now doesn't it mean its going to last long.
Once bought a nice Primare CD player, to match the amp I had at the time, only to have to replace the laser mechanism after 6 months.....
If I went new the Arcam CD5 it is more than I wanted to pay but isn’t everything new!

The Arcam 5 was a very highly-regarded cd player. If I were seeking a new player to replace it, I’d be looking no further than a Marantz CD6007. Excellent reviews and Marantz know their way around a cd player.
If you choose nearly new or used, many other options become available.

Following from above suggestion, I would look at a Marantz SA8005. You can find it in your budget and a very good player (also SACD, as the name suggests).

Rega Apollo sounds good but it seems they suffer from a few issues - had looked at it earlier in the year when upgrading from my Marantz CD6005 and found a few comments /threads talking about these issues; put me off and I ended up getting the SA8005 - and I am super happy with it.

Yes the reviews are good not a bad price either.
