Hi, i have recently started to change my music taste. I love classic rock and also 90s hiphop but at the moment im craving relaxing music. I cant stop playing elbow lately.. I then recently discovered Devotchka and the album 'how it ends'. So what im after is some more artists that are relaxing and slightly different. Its hard to find new music thats not pop. All the radio seems to play is cold play. Any suggestions?

Try LastFM site. Here's page showing similar artists to Elbow

http://www.last.fm/music/Elbow

Listen to some of them. Do the same search for other artists you like.

Try Spotify.

Go to the library and borrow as many albums as you can at a time that are slightly outside your usual listening. Borrow disc recommendations from friends.

Try some ambient instrumental musicscapes such as Boards of Canada and Sigur Ros, or the chant to a rhythum of Enigma. I secretly (well till now anyway) like to chill to a bit of Enya.

Elbow,Seldom Seen Kid. is a great album to chill out with and appreciate what's going on in the music some of which is unexpected like the horn blasting out on the first track over a subtle song. The last two albums from Elbow are also good.

Here are a few I would recommend attached to links where you can read reviews on them

Natalie Merchant - Opelia, a beautiful master peace

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Ophelia-Natalie-Merchant/dp/B000006OAM/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1235370697&sr=1-1

Camel-The Snow Gose. Think this will be right up your street. A chill out rock album that is classical and rock combined. It's a cracker.

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Snow-Goose-Camel/dp/B00005V1B2/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1235370998&sr=1-1

Supertramp - Crime Of The Centaury. For me there best album full of classic songs on the same type of tempo as Elbow and still sounds fresh.

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Crime-Century-Supertramp/dp/B000068FY0/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1235371530&sr=1-3

Wilco - Summerteeth. A great melodic album with songs as good as you will find anywhere. Interesting changes within the songs you don't expect.

I agree with Sigur Ros, Zero 7 and Air. Try Premieres Symptomes by Air.Its fantastic.

The Cafe Del Mar mix albums are pretty good too. My favourite is Volumen Cinqo.

As far as artists go i'd try Kinobe- Soundphiles, Lemon Jelly - first 3 EPs in one album, Mint Royale - Up the Ropes, The Orb - Little Fluffy Clouds, Morcheeba - Big Calm, Sebastian Tellier - Politics, Doves - Last Broadcast, Massive Attack - Blue Lines and Spiritualised - Let It Come Down.

Hope that helps !

You should listen to BBC 6 music either on DAB or using the listen again online and it won't be long before your skint trying to find half the stuff they play and now Coldplay in sight !. My favourite shows are nightly Mon-Thurs Mark Riley, Gideon Coe, Stewart Maconie's Freakzone on Sunday evening and Craig Charles' Funk Show on a Saturday evening.

As for relaxing music I would recommend, in no order of preference:

In The Wee Small Hours - Frank Sinatra

The Pearl - Harold Budd/Brian Eno or the new Eno & Byrne album is very good

Come On Feel (The Illinois) - Sufjan Stevens

Most of the Another Late Night compilation CD's

The Blue Notebooks - Max Richter

Boat To Bolivia - Martin Stephenson & The Daintees

Cold Feet - Rodriguez

What's Going On & Let's Get It On - Marvin Gaye

Separated By The Sea - Findlay Brown

Silent Movie - Quiet Village

What We Must - Jaga Jazzist

If there was a dictionary on music and you looked up relaxing and slightly different, this would be mentioned right underneath.

Badly Drawn Boy - The Hour Of The Bewilderbeast
