Don't worry about it. Make sure you have got 3 year Apple Care on the iMac and enjoy it.

Some people just like to invest a lot of their life hating other people's choice of domestic consumer durables. It's their problem not your's.

+1. Apple products just work. Generally they all work seemlessly together and look great. There is no Pc equivalent and Microsoft is nowhere near in terms of offering hardware and software as a fully integrated package of the same quality.

I tend to buy used kit to reduce the cost, as Apple is generally pricey, but having moved from Pcs, I do love the 'fafflessness' of it all.

Apple computers have limited amount of software available, and all Apple products do things their own way, thus in some cases limiting their flexibility. (They also tend to tie you in to their way of doing things)

You will also hear from Apple owners that they are more reliable and less prone to problems than PCs, however in reality there is no difference, (I have been working with all types of computer for over 30 years) so you can just ignore the vocal For & Against camps. (Remember there are more Windows PCs then Apple PCs so Windows will always appear to have more problems)

The only thing you need to know is that Apple is a pretty closed system, whereas Windows (And others) are more open, thus ultimately more flexible, (Also because 80% of the market is dominated by Windows you will always be able to have a chat with somebody that’s got one, whereas Mac owners are few and far between) but do you need that flexibility?

Golden rule when buying anything is make sure it does what you want, and it will work with what you already have, (Include anything you are thinking of upgrading to) then just go for it and enjoy.

Hope this helps

Abacus' final point is the most important - make sure it will do what you want it to do, rather than the other recent poster who got home to find his shiny new MacBook doesn't have a DVD drive. Apple's decision to remove an optical drive for much of their recent inventory will probably push me away from the brand for my next purchase, or will force me to buy second hand.

You've answered the question yourself. You can get the same performance for half the price. That hits the nail on the head. Apple is the most valuable brand in the World' which means you pay more for the Apple name than any other product. Good for Apple, but it also means that Apple products are the worst value for money products in the World. Not so good for consumers, but, as you say, it does not concern you.

The other main reason people hate them is incompatibility. Rather than go with Bluetooth, they copy and tweak it to make Airplay. rather than go with FLAC, they copy and tweak it to make ALAC. This is how systems used to be before Sir Tim Berners-Lee, when nothing was compatible and the PC may never have taken off for home use. So in some ways Apple are taking us backwards not forwards. Apple want everyone to buy everything from them. As you're doing this anyway, it shouldn't be a problem.

Just about every Apple device has Bluetooth, and they have for many years. Bluetooth does things AirPlay doesn't, just as AirPlay does things Bluetooth doesn't.

The true value in any product is shown when you have a problem and customer support needs to be involved.

I have had far more problems with non Apple products, but when things go wrong, the resolution process is painless.

My Macmini was the most unreliable computer h/w i've ever owned (in fact the only h/w i've ever owned thats failed, and numerous times) and made worse by the poor customer service i received.

So this perceived value people place on Apple products doesn't hold true for me.

Their h/w is no better than alternatives, the s/w is no better, easier to use or reliable than alternatives, and the customer service is no better (IME) they are more often than not more expensive though...

To be fair, your own personal experience cannot really count as representative of the norm. In general, I'd say Apple are quite a way ahead of most of the competition. If they were as poor as a small minority suggest, or even mediocre perhaps, how can you explain their huge market share?

If you had a problem with your Macmini, why did you not get it resolved via Apple Care? What was wrong with it?

I bought a MacBook about this time last year but just could not get on with it, and in the end could not be asked to learn how. So I took it back, did like how it looked and felt though, bought a Toshiba laptop instead. Got an IPad 2 which I use all the time and an iPhone 4s which I love.

Vast numbers of iPads: take handheld devices out of the equation and, in terms of global computer sales, Apple is tiny.

Tablets and handhelds are the new Pcs, they are computers in their own right and offer as much computing power as most consumers will ever need. I don't think Apple are concerned by the overall 'computer' sales, because this is a diminishing market globally. The quality and ease of use of Apple products has made them desirable, along with other factors.

As you can see from the responses to this thread, for no good reason.

"Negative ... reviews" - from whom?

The majority are very positive, for example:

Pocket-lint

PC Pro

The Independent

TechRadar

PC Advisor

Computerworld

Engadget - "It's actually a great value, too ... The best all-in-one on the market."

FWIW, I've used iMacs for work - office- and home-based - since 1998. The first frequently crashed, but only because my then-employer installed pirated versions of Quark and Photoshop.

Since, I've owned three iMacs and never had any problems / crashes, apart from an occasional Word crash when a large-ish doc - eg, 300+ pages - has been round the houses / worked on by multiple contributors.

Had a Windows PC hiatus during 2003-05 and it was a 'mare - frequent crashes every day, numerous lost docs, etc, and loathed the general clunkiness of the Hewlett Packard and especially its OS. Never again |(

But, I am in the camp that's miffed that Apple is dropping optical drives
