Can MacBooks be used to download Word etc? Or can you use a disc as well?

Wps office free on android and ios. Cheap for PC. Works a treat

Yes, you'll have to buy Microsoft Office for Mac. Bear in mind Mac is very different to Windows so it's a learning curve.

On most modern MacBooks you will have to buy and download, rather than using a disc, since Apple long ago decided optical drives were, like, so last century.

On the latest ones you're lucky to even get a standard USB socket, either a) because it lets the computer be more compact, or b) because it means you have to buy more dedicated accessories from Apple.

Although if you already have Word and Windows you could set up the MacBook to dual-boot into either Windows or OSX.
