Hi,

I have just bought a wharfedale sw250 sub with line level and speaker level inputs. This will be used with my av amp when i buy it, but as i'll not be getting it for a month or so, can i use it with my arcam alpha 8 amp? If so how do I wire it up?

cheers

simon

If it has speaker level inputs, you would run a set of cables from the 2nd speaker terminals direct to the sub (assuming the alpha has two sets)?

that is the back of an alpha 8p (only image i could find right now) but i have the same "sp1 direct" "sp2 switched" connections on the back of mine - i'll give it a go tonight but do you think it'll work or does the amp just let you switch between 2 sets of speakers, not power them both together?

cheers

Basically, Direct is permanently on, and Switched means the speakers get muted when you put a pair of headphones in.

So, as long as you don't put headphones in, you should be fine using both sets.

Actually. I think it's SP1 that are non-switchable, but will still mute with headphones. SP2 are switched, in that there's a button on the amp that says SP2. This will switch the SP2 on and off.

I could be wrong, but that's how my Arcam amp works.

Connecting the sub to the switched (SP2) connections is a good idea, as you can turn it on or off in seconds, with no effort.
