Can I connect my CD receiver to my Onkyo HTX-22HD ?

I have an Onkyo HTX-22HD that has a BluRay player, Virgin+ box
connected to the HDMI slots and an Xbox connected via one of the optical
connections (for the sound )
Is there a way that I can connect a Denon UD-M31 Cd receiver to it so that I can
make use of the surround sound of the Onkyo ?

The Denon has an optical out
Would that be better as there is another optical in on the Onkyo ?

so it does under the CD section. so you will only get CD input and you will be using the Onk's DAC.

Sorry..I don't undstand what you are saying there
Bear with me a lot of this is new to me

I've just connected an optical cable and it seems to work fine
Can I now unplug the stereo speakers I had connected to the Denon
or will that cause damage to it ?

NO other data will go down it.

I haven't tried that yet

...and what about disconnecting the stereo speakers?
Is that an option or will damage be caused to the Denon >
