Campaign for sky to make a programmable remote

I find it utterly incredible that in this day and age of multiple boxes there is still not integration between handset functions so that we can do most things from one device. Why can we not turn on the TV, Sky and a HC box in one go from one device and if nothing else turn up the volume on the HC system whilst watching sky. Just before you all shout you can you idiot buy a Logitech remote, I would like to point out one simple thing. The Sky handset (although debatably looking and feeling a little cheap) is a masterpiece of design; it works perfectly. The Sky handset without doubt receives the most button presses by a factor of 100 than any other in the room and I think we all generally take for granted what a superb interface and relationship the Sky box and remote provide.

But and its a big but, it can't do much else. The remote codes for TVs are a joke. I have a Samsung UE46B000. I can turn it on, I can turn up the volume but as it often does it starts on the RF mode (why when there is no aerial connected) I have to change input, I have to select TV, then Help, Help, Help to cycle through the inputs then Info to escape out of input selection then Info once more to clear the info banner that I did not want just to complete a sequence. Up and down do nothing, right and left do nothing, select might as well not exist, its pathetic, but this charade of activities is even not my biggest complaint.

The sound on my TV is poor, I am considering a HC system. I want it to come on when I turn the TV on and go up on down in response to my command respective of the source I am watching which is of course as it is for most of us TV.

I have researched this to no avail. No one really knows the answer, a learning remote isn't either as I want to use the Sky handset. Why would you not? Its the best tool for navigating the superb interface at speed without looking at the thing. Why can't Sky make a version of their handset that can be programmed with a macro facility and be able to be trained to other manufacturer functions.

I believe this is frustrating nearly everyone who has a sky and HC system and would like to start a campaign to persuade Sky to commission then sell a programmable remote. It must keep the original's ethic of being easy to use but it must also be able to seamless command basic functions on other external devices. Yes this might result in a few more buttons on the handset but these could be hidden under a sliding cover. Keep the codes system for basic users but connect it to a PC for programming, or setup a department to develop programmes for manufacturer combinations, build them, ship them on a micro SD to the customer and charge for them, whatever but do something as this cannot go on.

Comments are welcome and if there are enough and people feel the same I try to find somone at Sky to send them to then report how we get on.

Just a quick question, why is it SKY's responsibility? Why isn't it the electronic manufacturers responsibility? I'm quite sure if Amstrad offer to develop a SKY remote with learning capabilies at no additioonal cost to the consumer or SKY they would be more than happy.

Anyway i only use the sky remote in the bedroom and because it hasn't been my prefered remote of choice for the last 10 years i have to think what buttons to push at times. Why oh why don't SKY make a remote identical to my Marantz 6003 learning remote, lol

You are not quite getting the point. 99% of the time the Sky interface/handset relationship is what is used and needed. They are a matched pair. Additional buttons, the navigation learned over many years of consistency, the standardisation Sky want to bring to bear are all why I think the handset should be sky based and not a.n.other. I dont feel it is Skys responsibility but I do think they could be a tad more helpful regarding integration and could offer this handset as a chargeable upgrade. I am surprised that there has not been more comment, clearly I am off the mark and everyone is happy with their remote bundle bound by rubber bands

If you're a contributor to this forum, it's easy to forget that the number of HC enthusiasts is still incredibly small. It just isn't a priority for Sky. For those of us who are really keen, £100 on a Harmony remote is a reasonable sum IMO, given the overall cost of the whole set-up . The rest of my family use it without thinking and without it they'd be in a constant muddle. For me, the best gadgets are the ones that become invisible because they're so good!

Well IMHO my Sky+HD remote does me for all normal viewing except switching the amp to blu ray.

Sky+HD remote turns TV on (amp turns on auto via viera link but remote could turn amp on).
Remote adjusts sound levels on the amp and can change presets and switch inputs on the tv.
Remote turns TV and amp off (viera link)

Only when it comes to changing amp inputs do I need the amp remote.

So no problem for 90% of my viewing.

i hate to tell you this but the sky remote control is very flexable and is very capable

of turning up the volume on a home cinema system mine does no problem

give sky a call i'm pretty sure they can help you with this enquiry.

plus most home cinema systems come with a learning remote and can be configured to turn everything on

at the press of a button
