the wifi dongle has stoppped working on my 851n streamer, can i just buy a 3rd party usb wifi dongle?

When did you buy it, they've only been out for a year or so, is it out of warranty?

about 6mnths, sent cambridge audio a message over social media will await a reply. In the mean time i think i will get a cat5 or cat6 ethernet cable

Assuming you're based in the UK, your warranty is through the retailer (which I assume is Richer Sounds) and you should contact them. I'd do this regardless of whether you plan to ultimately use a cable just in case it's something more than the deongke that's gone wrong.
