The Panasonic has a fantastic picture out of the box and deserves all the press plaudits it's getting! I'm just wondering whether or not it's worth running a calibration test a la THX (found in THX DVD) to get the best out of it? I'm using RGB SCARTS and HDMI connections (where applicable). Any recommendations would be appreciated. Thank you.

Try the THE DIGITAL VIDEO ESSENTIALS dvd from asda online for £12.43 delivered. It takes a while to do but well worth it.Just used it on my plasma worked well.

I am glad you like this TV as I am getting one installed on the 21st Nov!

Can I ask whether you view through Sky or Freeview? The reviews say that SD is really good but someone who has the TV told me that it isn't as good as CRT but not sure whether this depends on the source?

Of course, it could be just be that he doesn't have a good enough scart?

Most people I have spoken to have been happy to leave it on auto settings and haven't felt the need to run a calibration test.

Would these be the same people who say the picture isn't that great?!?!

PLEASE don't leave the settings the same out of the box.If you can't be bothered to run the THX calibration from a DVD, or something like Digital Video Essentials, at least take a few seconds to adjust the contrast, colour and brightness.

Full details here.

It's a tiny tweak that'll transform your TV.

Forgot to ask whether a DVE is easy to use?

I don't want to end up making things worse?

Like anything in life....fine if you know what you are doing, but I lost my temper with the DVE Disc when I bought it and duly escorted it to the dustbin as I believed that's where it really belonged

Doesn't sound like it is for me then!

If you didn't get on with it then I can't see me that I will as I am a bit of a technophobe.

What did you then? Twiddle and tweak?!!!!

Yep.....I twiddled and tweaked which is sometimes the best way............let's face it....you can't do anymore to a TV than the set up controls and menus allow you to anyway....and I'm telling you, I have got a great SD picture from my PS42Q97HD Samsung Plasma to which I have my 6 year old SKY Digibox connected.

I think the problem with all this stuff is that so many of us never end up just enjoying what we've bought because we're all so tied up too much technical stuff.

If we were all owls and had razor sharp eyesight that might be a different matter...but we're don't and as long as I am happy with a picture I'm not intersted in what others may think of the picture on my telly, which of course everyone who's seen the picture on by £700 Samsung is in awe of it. Another reason why I didn't go for Pioneers and the like........what for? Another £800.....that's what!

Claire is so right that it is really important to make adjustments to the picture settings, in fact, it is vital. When I first looked at my Panasonic TX-32LXD700 I was slightly concerned at the image I saw, but after those tweaks and twists to the calibration it turned into a new beast. One of the most important things to remember is that you choose an appropriate distance to view the screen at. Follow the 'What Hi-Fi Guide'. I have standard sky plus connected to the tv with P2110 Scart leads and the picture is the best I have seen from all flatscreens experienced, though have not experienced the 42" Pioneer yet! The difference between this screen and CRT that will be most noticeable will be the slightly poorer black levels and small amount of smearing when very close. Overall the best lcd out there!

Before you started calibrating the Panasonic, which settings did you use as a starting point i.e Normal, Cinema et al? Thanks.

I believe I started on the 'dynamic' setting. Then I lowered; contrast, brightness, colour and switched off that stupid noise reduction thing completely. These changes really improved things. Also I set colour type to 'warm'. Though I must admit that I am contemplating getting sky hd to upgrade from my current sky + box.
