Hi I am a newby here but need some advice

I have a Sony BDP-S360 Blu-ray, a Denon AVR-1910 receiver and a Sky HD+ box

Do I run the HDMI lead from the Sony Blu Ray straight into the TV and run an optical into the receiver for the surround sound or do I run the HDMI lead straight from the Sony into the receiver.

I have only just bought the Sony, which is my first foray into BluRay and so have a lot of DVDs that need to be upscaled. Is it best to get the receiver to do this or the Sony BluRay player?

Similar question about the SKY box. Currently connected straight into theTV with an optical to the receiver, but not sure if this is the best way.

Manual says run all through the Denon Receiver but what is best?

Thanks

HDMI to receiver, HDMI from receiver to TV. That way you can get all the HD sound formats from the BD player to your AMP.

Sony BDP is a good upscaler, and so is Denon. My money's that the Sony might just inch it - but wouldn't want to put a wager on it. Think it's a case of suck it and see. One thing though, if you want the Denon to do the upscaling, you'll have to set the Sony to output in 576p and then remember to reset it to 1080p for Blu-Rays (or vice versa).

No HD sound out via HDMI on Sky box (unless that's changed with the new 1TB model?). So your config is probably the best way. You could run the HDMI through the receiver for pictures, but then you'd need to set the Denon so that it took picture from HDMI and sound from optical for that source - which will be fun knowing what a Denon's manual is like...

Hope this helps.

OK being dumb here and missing a point.

Assume I have a HDMI cable running from BD player to Receiver and a HDMI cable from the Receiver to the TV, That works great for the sound, but I assume I also need to have a connection from BD player to TV if I am to get the BD player to upscale my standard DVDs rather than the Receiver.

Otherwise how does BD player do the upscaling for standard DVDs and if I do that do I lose picture quality for the Blu Ray discs?

Hi Rich,

If you set your output resolution to 1080p on the BD then the receiver will not scale anything as the video signal being received is already at max resolution.

The default, out of the box settings for the S360 is to output everything at 1080p - i.e. it will upscale DVDs by default. If you have an HDMI from the BDP to the amp then it will pass through the 1080p picture (no upscaling required) and extract the HD audio for decoding/amplification. You need no connection from the BDP to the TV.

Does this all make sense?
