Yup, Xbox can hook into system using HDMI and hook the Sky+ direct to the TV via RBG Scart. Can't remember if the Sky+ has an optical out, but if so, use this to hook it into the Sony, if not, you can just use standard RCA phono lead to hook it up if you want this to go through your speaker system as well.
According to the manual, the length of speaker cords available is 4.5m (I guess for surrounds) x 2.3m (I guess for front left / right) x 1.12m (I guess for centre) x 2m (I guess for sub). Perhaps someone who owns the item can confirm?

many thanks mr.hat!

your posts have been invaluable!

one final thing,i know that hdmi cables make all the difference to picture etc when setting up,so i intend to scour what hi fi reviews for a good lead at a decent price, but does the same go for the RGB scart?

Could i use a bog standard scart lead or would it be wise to invest in a quality lead?

thanks again and apologies for all the additional questions

No problem - RGB Scart leads are the same - bought a decent QED RGB Scart lead and it improved the picture of my PVR by orders of magnitude compared with the freebie one I was using previously.
