Buz/hum active speaker with new turntable

This afternoon I installed my new turntable, a Thorens TD 403 DD. My active speakers are the floor-standing Argon Audio Fenris A55.

The speakers have a built-in amplifier; the turntable is connected to the Phono input via an RCA cable.

If the turntable is off and I only have the speakers on, I hear a soft hum/buzz when I turn the volume up to halfway. Below that, it is barely audible, if at all. Again: the turntable is off but connected, and I have also connected the ground cable between the speaker and the turntable.

Is this normal? How can I fix this?
Can this do any harm to my new turntable?

The left speaker, where the amplifier is in, is about 20cm’s away from the TT. The right speaker is about 1 meter away.

having the speakers to close to the TT will not help try moving the left speaker further away see if that helps .

I’ll try that. But is it possible to hear the buz when the turntable is off, like it is now?

Only the turntable is connected to the speaker.

Turn the speakers volume to minimum.
Disconnect both RCA signal plugs from the turntable.
With the speaker end of the twin RCA cable still plugged into the phono input:

Put a direct short circuit across both left and right open ended RCA plugs (between the central pin and outer plug body).
Then turn the speaker volume up.
You should have silence at the halfway point.
See whether you have.

On the back of the active speaker is a volume knob. It was at 8 o’clock. When I raise the volume with the remote control, I could go 3 presses up before the buzz is becoming hearable.

I turned the knob on the back of the speaker on 12 o’clock, the buz becomes hearable after 7 presses on the remote control.

Can anyone explain how this is possible? The volume knob at the back of the speaker is normal output volume, right?

Remote and physical volume control effectively do the same thing.
You're going off at a tangent.
Some speakers with built-in amps have undesirable, inherent background noise.
You need to know whether yours are sufficiently quiet - before questioning anything connected to them.

Have you tried other inputs eh Hdmi Arc from a TV or Blutooth from phone , is noise still present
Is latest Firmware installed
Can you get a longer cable - move TT further away
These are probably Powered not true active speakers, does noise come from passive / active speaker
Is ground ( 3wire ) connected to Ground terminal on back of speaker

All the electronics are in the left speaker. The right speaker is completely passive, but fed via a special three-metre four-pole cable. Since the Fenris A55 is powerful enough to play up a larger living room, a longer cable may be needed so that the speakers can be placed at an appropriate distance

It may be that the speakers phono preamp section isn't particularly well designed and an external phono preamp may be required.
It may be a good idea to get one anyway as the standard turntable phono cable length of 1.2m is going to severely limit placement of both turntable and speakers.

At that setting, how loud would it be playing music? Too loud, about ‘normal’, too quiet?

Powered speakers will have some ‘self noise’. Unless you can hear it at your listening position and once you stop playing a record at your normal volume then I’d not be concerned.

Is it worse with the Thorens than the turntable that you returned? Is it better if you use different mains sockets to power the speakers or turntable? Some kit doesn’t like sharing the same socket!
