When you burn discs from itunes does it matter at which speed you burn onto the the blank disc. ie does it affect sound quality if you burn at maximum speed as opposed to a slower speed?

In theory, the slower the speed, the less chance of errors during the burning process and therefore (again in theory) it should sound better. Can't say I've ever tested the theory though.

I would burn at a lower speed too - the prof is correct. Well, even if he's not, it's better to be safe.....

Used to be a "rule of thumb" to burn at no more than half the maximum speed of your burner e.g. if you have a 48 speed drive use no more than X 24. Personally I burn at lower speeds, X 16 max and use reasonable quality blanks.

I have burned dozens of discs as back up for downloads and not had any issues just letting itunes get on with it at whatever its default setting is.

With digital files, 'sound quality' is fixed: Either they are played back, or they're not.

Burning on slower speeds reduce the chances of errors. Faulty discs will not have lesser sound quality as long as they work, but the errors might cause glitches in the playback or even make the disc unplayable.

CD players might be good or less good at handling errors. A disc that won't play in one CDP might work with another player.
