After buying a Marrantz NR1501 with a Boston acoustics XS 5.1 speaker set, which I am hugely impressed with, I now feel the sub woofer is far from neighbour friendly!

Has anyone any suggestions as to the best compromise settings to use to remove the sub and just use the 5 speakers. Should I adjust the cross over frequencies or simply turn the bass up on the receiver?

Band of brothers blu ray/Pacific etc really shake the house

sorry newbie questions I know!!

I think you will find that removing the sub altogether is not the best option, as not only will it handle the low frequencies, it may take up some of the mid range the little sats can't reach down to. If you go into the AVRS setting you will be able to turn the sub level down, either this or if there is a volume dial on the sub turn it down.

Failing that, some AVR units have an adapitive dynamic range control or night mode, this evens out the sound levels from the quiet parts and loud parts of the sound track so there is no sudden increase in volume.

Thanks guys - the night mode setting does not work on DTS mode from Blu ray - is that correct?

Yes it looks right it only applies to Dolby and Dolby trueHD, if you look at page 24, section 4-3 it will show you how to trim back the LFE when recording a dolby & DTS signal, that or lowering the SW level in the speaker set up will be your best option.
